Sawtooth Ale is an English style Extra Special Bitter. It is an extremely well balanced beer, with significant hop character, medium body, and a maltiness which increases in evidence as the beer warms to its "proper" drinking temperature. . The water used is quite hard, bringing it to near Burton on Trent levels, keeping it true to the style. This gives it the appropriate character and improves the malt extract significantly.

Pours a sightless unclear golden orange with medium and quickly vanishing white head. Smells of caramely malts, faint fruits, older hops. Taste is caramel, light citrus, crisp, light refreshing. Pretty nice esb with a nice hop note

Nitro bottle at Ventnor. This was my first Left Hand Nitro. It poured exactly how a nitro should and does pour. Aroma was malty. I see above that it is supposed to warm a bit, but it was served out of the beer cooler. Flavor and aroma certainly were muted. Enjoyable, just not remarkable. Slightly malty, slightly bitter, with a bit more malt than hop. Probably should try it again.

Bottle at the casa. Nose is grassy hops, stale biscuits, light caramel. Flavor is similar with a biscuit and hay flavor. Hops are there. Not too bad.

Medium bready aroma, slight sweetness on the nose. Pours amber with a soft white head. Soft round mouthfeel, grainy flavour, low bitterness with a slight hop bite in the aftertaste. Aftertaste builds over time, fairly average.

Bottle. Pours a true copper, white head that dies to a thin layer. Nose is sweet caramel malt. Tastes sweet a true to style. I like it.

Pretty average. Sweet and malty, almost in an extract way. Piney. Not terribly good.

Keg at The Earl of Essex, Islington, London. An amber coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Malty, caramel aroma. Tastes malty, caramel, slightly dry and one dimensional but quite drinkable.

Nitro bottle. Pours amber with a thick off-white head coalescing on top. Nose is somewhat muted by the head, but has herbs and spicy, caramelly malts reminiscent of good English ESB. Flavor is an excellent rendition of an ESB - perhaps the best I’ve had in an American bottled beer, as a result of the way that the nitro texture enhances the flavor - this is like drinking a wonderful dream that reminds me of some of the best pints I had in England. Flavor is bitter upfront with an herbal bitterness that pleasantly stays on the tongue throughout, more spice and just a bit of sweetness in the middle, finish has a dry mild bitterness that makes one want to sip more. Great stuff.
