Sawtooth Ale is an English style Extra Special Bitter. It is an extremely well balanced beer, with significant hop character, medium body, and a maltiness which increases in evidence as the beer warms to its "proper" drinking temperature. . The water used is quite hard, bringing it to near Burton on Trent levels, keeping it true to the style. This gives it the appropriate character and improves the malt extract significantly.

Big creamy foam as expected. Aroma is malt with a little fruit. Taste is like sort of like a malty pale ale. Good flavor and ready to drink. Nice beer.

12 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, best before 8/26/2014. Pours fairly crystal clear deep orange/copper color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of orange zest, pear, apple, caramel, toast, biscuit, light nuttiness, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, earthy hops, and fruity yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of orange zest, pear, apple, caramel, toast, biscuit, light nuttiness, herbal, floral, light pine, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes or orange zest, pear, apple, caramel, toast, biscuit, light nuttiness, herbal, floral, light pine, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and complexity of dark/bready malt, earthy hops, and fruity yeast ester flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly creamy, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good ESB style. All around good balance, complexity, and robustness of dark/bready malt, earthy hops, and fruity yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Nitro bottle at Buffalo Wild Wings (Frederick, MD) hard poured into pint glass, ambery-copper color with slow mowing nitro bubbles. Aroma of malt and faint earthy/herbal hops. Taste added some nuttiness. Medium-light body, low carb (nitro), creamy with minimal malty bitter finish. First nitro ESB I’ve had; nice texture, balanced and pleasant.

Transfer from BA review on 8-9-12 - Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – Served a hazy amber/ brownish color with a one finger head. The head did not have great retention and fades to give only a light amount of lacing. Smell – The aroma is of some sweet caramel mixed with bitter earthy and herbal hop aromas and a strong malty base. Taste – The taste has a nice malty backbone throughout; biscuit and bready in nature. This malty backbone starts out with a light amount of the caramel that was detected in the nose. Soon however the bitter comes to the tongue in the form of more earthy and herbal hop tastes. Toward the end a lighter citrus hop is also detected. While overall the hop tastes are light, they meld very well with the malty flavors and create overall a very smooth and refreshing flavor profile. Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is thicker and more smooth then I would have anticipated at 5.3 % abv. This coupled with a slightly lower than average carbonation level creates a very easy drinking brew. Overall – A quite delicious, easy drinking, and smooth beer. Very nice for the style.

Appearance is deep golden/amber, clear, and has a minimal white foam cap that holds together fairly well. Aroma is dominated by crystal malt, with a nice herbal, earthy hop character. Taste is toasted malt and caramel with a snappy hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is light to medium with low carbonation. Finishes with a mineral like character on the tongue and some lingering toasted malt

Very malty with not a lot of bright hop notes... On nitro and almost devoid of carbonation... A slight aroma - Cascade? - as it warmed...

Pint pour from bottle. Decent amber with full off white nitro head. Aroma is malted biscuit notes and dry bread. Mild hops, but nothing bitter. Flavor again is smooth malted caramel notes and biscuit. Really enjoyable

Bottle. Pours crystal clear amber. Nose is malty and oats. Flavor is mildly bitter and some caramel. Not a big ESB fan but this a good.

BBD 6/4/14. Pours a clear amber with a good head. Lacing and retention are normal. Nice subtle nose of orange, caramel malt and spice over a nice subdued mineral note. Magnificent heavy medium body that is creamy and better than many stouts. Above average carbonation with a nice effervescent finish. Well balanced and somewhat complex flavor profile. It begins with an orange and spice note which then flows into a moderate bitterness. Towards the end, the sweet caramel malt shines. It finishes with an effervescent burst that is slightly citric and tart, leaving you with a nice lingering low level bitterness over a mineral note. Not as bitter as I expected, it is; however, quite outstanding.

This was the nitro version on tap, which is the one I recommend. The aroma was faint and malty with just a touch of floral hops. The appearance was light copper with the cascading effect, which is cool. The palate was smooth and light. Flavors were balanced but not overly exciting, which I attribute to the style. Malty but with a hint of bitterness. Not bland though. Good example and would be easy to drink a few.
