Sawtooth Ale is an English style Extra Special Bitter. It is an extremely well balanced beer, with significant hop character, medium body, and a maltiness which increases in evidence as the beer warms to its "proper" drinking temperature. . The water used is quite hard, bringing it to near Burton on Trent levels, keeping it true to the style. This gives it the appropriate character and improves the malt extract significantly.

A - Pours a burnt orange. 2 finger head. Descent retention. Slight lacing S - Clean citrus. Sharp caramel malt. Butterscotch. T - Citrus hops blend into a toasted caramel/toffee malt. Hints of amaretto, pecan, tea, and spicy floral hops. The finish is bitter and slightly spicy. M - Medium. Almost has a creaminess to it. This is a fantastic beer. It has great balance with a great malt profile. The hops compliment the beer very well. Highly recommended. Serving type: bottle 09-29-2010

A great malty flavor. Very well balanced. It is not as bitter as you would think. Had this brew pushed with nitro instead of CO2. So it didnít have the bubbles and ting of a normal ale. Would drink think again in a heartbeat.

On tap. Dark red-brown with a thin off-white head. Both the nose and taste are malt heavy with caramel and some dark fruit. Lot of sweetness with a nutty edge. Gentle grassy hop note. Not too bad but not overly exciting either.

12 oz nitro-bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a clear chestnut color. The head isnít that high for a nitro-beer - at less than a finger high - and is colored white. However, the texture and softness of the head is incredible. S: Smells rather dull, expected given the serving method. When it warms up, though, it picks up notes of apricot, caramel, toffee, butter/diacetyl, and maybe a touch of vanilla. For a nitroíd ESB, the nose could have been far worse. T: Toasted caramel malts start things off, giving way to a mildly fruited finish. There are some touches of vanilla flavor I enjoy. I also like how the blandness covers up the less desirable ESB notes...wait, what? Sorry. Letís just say itís a boring beer thatís at least easy to down. M: This actually has a nice feel. It starts off relatively full-bodied, before immediately turning bone-dry - it stops just short of being watery, however. No real carbonation, but thankfully the dryness renders the need for the former void. O: Itís a decent party beer, no more, no less. If someone buys a case of this - other than me, for obvious reasons (bland, ESB) - for a celebration and itís the only thing available, damn right Iíll kill a few of these in a night.

Oooooh. Love the head (like always). Super frothy, hella lacing. Thick thick creamy micro bubbles.taste very mellow, texture of this is the best part. Ever so slightly bitter.

Nitro tap. Pale amber. Light citrus hops and caramel malt. Flavor is golden/caramel with citrus hops and candy. Nitro actually went well with this.

I wish this would be listed separately for the nitro version. Itís a totally different beer. Anyway, the appearance is copper with dense, white head. Nitro gives cascading and lingering foam lace. Nose is caramel, nutty, biscuit, undefined hops. Taste: caramel, floral hop, clean malt. Smooth, low carbonation, medium body. Creamy. Balanced in all aspects. Bitter-sweet-malt-hop.
