3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
I donít know how many versions of this beer exist, but this is the 2007 that Iím rating in a 750ml bottle. Cork was a bugger to egt out, and then came out with a big old "POP!" The beer pours out a murky brown grey colour with minimal head and quite a bit of carbonation. I have to say, this is quite possibly the least attractive beer I have had in a while - but looks arenít everything. Aroma is really spot on for the style, sweet, woody gamey with a good Rauch-like meat smoke, but not super meaty, as thereís an oaky wood smoke that balances the aroma. Then there are more aromas of toast, dough, touch of fruitiness and a touch of booze. Flavour continues in the same vane, but with more yeast coming through, and seriously light touch of hoppy bitterness, but this is dominated by sweetness and malt, more smoke and more wood. Tastes a little chipotle like, but without any heat. Finish is slightly tart, smoky and relatively short. The body is light and a bit fizzy, but to be honest, this doesnít bother me too much as I think it suits the style, and stops it from becoming cloying. Overall, I think the beer succeeds in itís intenstions, and as my first bottled Left Hand beer, is a nice treat and quite cool to see the US brewing scene doing such a good job of creating an homage in this fashion.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Picked this up for $12. Pours a cool satin amber/red with large head. Chunks of some fizzing substance. Great smoke smell. Smoke taste that is powerful the first few sips. Seemed like a fatty finish from the start. After a couple ounces the beer started to taper off - being thin. Is this a good beer? Yes. Can I justify spending three times the amount over a German Rauchbier? Absolutely not.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Popping the top let out a misty fog that apparated in the bottle followed by some bubbles growing up the neck. The pour is a creamy brown. The light brown head actively jumps to the top of the glass and stayed strong for approximately 5 minutes. Then it slowly settled down from itís initial defiant demeanor. Holding up to the light surprisingly reveals a deep yet vibrant ruby red color that scampers back into hiding behind the brown when taken away from the light.
The aroma hits me with a sweet nuttiness at first. The second whiff reveals a slight tangyness in the back of the throat. I makes me think of walking in old woods right after a rainstorm and coming upon an old abandoned beautiful wood house.
The flavor first thickly crawls out of the glass with a dark woody sensation. The word íSmokedí from the beer name become immediately apparent. Flavors of nuts come through with the exhale after the swallow. I get a touch of íold caramel peanut brittle in a bowl at grandmas houseí with the third sip. Very tasty. Iím still too early in my beer rating career to have familiarity with malty flavors. But Iím assuming the caramel syrupy effect Iím feeling is from malt.
The palate is very horizontal - meaning that the way it starts out is the way it ends. There are no roller coasters with the way this beer feels. It is rock solid. Just the right amount of carbonation to even out the syrupy sense of this beer.
Nothing hits me as fresh with this beer. It all feels like how your grandfather has been using the same pan to make potatoes for 40 years and refuses to try a different way; just because the way he settled on is perfect. The emotions I get from this beer are aged, calculated, well thought out, and practiced. I really enjoy this beer. Itís not a style that Iím into right now, but it is still extremely enjoyable. My wife thinks it tastes like bacon (sheís vegetarian). One last note - the cork was impossible to get out.
