Bottle shared by Chuck. Black body under a dense, thick tan head. Wood smoke and bubblegum in the strong nose; enjoyable. Rich, strong chocolate/berry and wood flavor with gentle wood char on top. Similar finish. This is a damn good porter with a well-balanced smoke addition.

wow, this is such a good beer. not just a good smoked beer, but a good beer. dark oily black body with a lasting coating gray head. smells lightly of snmoke, but, cured leather and old barn wood is what i get. a touch of the sweet malt comes pout in the aroma too. the taste, well, it is what it is for sure. lasting tongue drying bitter and alcohol. dry cocoa, bitter smokey wood taste and a dry beef flavor. the smoke is light in the nose, very subtle with the coffee and cocoa taking the lead in the first taste, but the finish is that dry, libngering smoke note, that dominates. after every taste i spend a moment enjoying the change from bitter chocolate and spice to the alcohol dry stick my head in a smoker taste. it is just a great experience.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Stine (1399) - St. Paul, Minnesota, USA - MAR 4, 2007
UPDATED: OCT 29, 2007 Pour is black but not so oily. Aroma of chocolate mousse and leather. Hint of smooth coffee bitterness. Cedar smoke flavor and semi-sweet chocolate, some roast and black currant. Medium to full-bodied palate, less commanding than expected; kind and pleasantly drinkable.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 JK (3509) - Uptown, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - MAR 3, 2007
This beer is very good for an American smoked. The aroma is strong smoke, with roast beef and leather. Flavor is smoky with some sweetness as well with a palate that is thiner than I expected from a beer with such a rich aroma.

Bottle - corked and caged. Pours opaque and near jet black. Only the faintest amount of light peeks through around the edges. Nose is roasty and very smoky. Light smoked meats, roasted malts, burnt coffee, burning wood and dark bittersweet chocolate. Taste is almost full on smoke. Smoked and roasted malts, lightly smoked meats, burnt coffee, and soft dark chocolate. Bit of caramel, as well. Body is creamy and smooth with an everlasting smokiness. Finish is bitter and smoky with more burnt coffee and burnt wood notes, light choco flavors, touch of caramel, maybe even burnt tomato-based BBQ sauce. The is very nice, though I’m not sure how well it will age despite it’s high alcohol content and bottle conditioning. I believe I have an extra (I’ve recently moved and my "cellar" is in a state of disrepair). Would go great with sausages, BBQ, and some seafoods!
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 capistrano (5) - North Carolina, USA - MAR 2, 2007 does not count
I rate this beer as average mainly cause I have never had anything quite like it so there is room to grow. The aroma is perplexing. You’re not too sure whats coming up. As for the taste, I’m not sure how Left Hand was able to liquefy salmon dip but they did. Was only able to try a small portion so it might have grown on me

Pours a nice dark brown/black with a decent dark tan head. Nice bitter chocolate nose with a nice smokey overtone, and hints of wood chips. Nice medium carbonation carry the delicate chocolate and toffee flavors through with the strong, but not overpowering woodfire smokiness. There is a nice light floral hoppiness that helps carry the smoke and chocolate to the finish. A wonderful smoked beer from the U.S., which is not very common.

At the 2007 Big Beer, Belgians, & Barleywines Festival in Vail. Pours black with a tan head. Wonderful peaty smoky aroma that has a flair of roasted coffee as well. Malty and earthy flavors surround a thick sorgum flavor. Very toasted and roasted. The smoke flavor is there, just not as huge as the aroma anticipates. Very delicious. Chocolatey and dangerously drinkable at this high an abv.

Pours dark brown with a light brown to tan head. Smells of smoke, chocolate, some coffee, some dark fruit. Taste is smokey with lots of dark chocolate and coffee elements. Mouthfeel is velvety with a nice dark fruit and smokey finish. Finally, a beer from Left Hand that I like.

UPDATED: AUG 31, 2007 22 oz bottle via Captaincougar (thanks!). Pours a thin dark brown/almost black with a huge beige head that leaves more spider lacing than any beer i have ever seen. Nose is smoke, vanilla, and more smoke. Taste starts wtih some sweet caramel, then some vanilla, some earthy/citrus hops, then the smoke kicks in. Finish and aftertaste are a nice blend of sweet malt, earthy hops, some toffee and lots of smoke. Carbonation is medium, body is medium. Drinkabillty is high. Alc well hidden. I think this is my favorite smoked beer thus far. Very very well-done and world class.
