COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The usually peaceful St. Vrain River snakes out of the Rocky Mountains, winding mischievously towards our brewery. Named after Ceran St. Vrain, an 1800’s trapper and trader in the valley, St. Vrain is our version of a classic Belgian Tripel. Light in color and lightly hopped using Celeia hops, a touch of malt sweetness contrasts the warm spiciness hidden within. What at first appears benevolent can manifest into a mighty serpent in waiting.

Pours a hazy sunny yellow with a fairly thick, if not too persistent, white head. Aroma is fairly strong, fruity and yeasty with a malty undertone and a hint of butterscotch. Flavor fills the mouth with mainly fruity and yeasty tones, a firm hint of malt, just a touch of sweetness and a little hop bitterness. Texture is smooth as silk and leaves a nice tingle on the tongue.

Intense sweet peach nectar, slight biscuit. Lighter gold color, slight haze, medium head with light soap and nice lacing. Honey peach sweetness, very slight barnyard funk, mild but appropriate bitterness. Big effervescence, medium light syrupy body, finish is candied fruit and slight clove spice, alcohol warmth is masked well. Very tasty beer, but seems it could use just a bit more complexity of flavors. It seems to flirt with different directions of nuances, but does not quite go all the way there.

Bottle from Butters. Pretty old, but not sure how old. Light golden brown in color. Nice. Aromas and flavors are very typical of the style. The beer is stylistically correct but seems to be playing it safe. It’s a little sweet. The fruit is very plain. No Belgian funk. Very drinkable though. Maybe not the best beer ever, but a great beginners Tripel.

Sample at Buckeye Beer Engine. Pours clear yellow with a thin white head. Malty sweet, almost cream ale aroma. Flavor is creamy malt and peppery yeast. I’m not a big fan of the banana and bubble gum Belgian yeast, but this seems kinda weak for a trippel. Oh well, I probably would prefer this over bananas and bubble gum, so not sure what I’m complaining about.

On tap at the Beer Engine. Neon yellow/green pour with white head and very little carbonation. The color really put me off. Bitter lemony aroma. Flavor is a very very weak version of what a tripel should be: get the usual spices and all but it’s muted so it’s the last thing you taste but a bit skunky.

On Tap at the Left Hand Brewing Company, Longmont 23/09/2009 Slight banana fruit aroma. Low carbonation. Golden coloured and a little hazy in appearance. Smooth on the palate with some alcohol present. A hint of bitterness in a crisp and creamy malt finish.

Bottle pours a clear straw golden with a thin white head. Aroma of Belgian spice, citrus, yeast, bananas, and pepper. Flavor is sweet belgian malt, fruitiness, peppery notes, and a lightly bitter finish.

All Colorado Beer Festival. Light yellow. OK Belgium yeast and banana and booze. Citrus, banana, and a sweeter malt depth, and lighter yeast presence. Finish is bitter, lingering, and rather light/soft on the tongue that keeps medium warming sensation from heavier booze.

Tap at Barcade 5th Anniversary party. Very pale straw coloured beer. The nose is quite light and spicy with a lean Belgian spiciness. The flavour is pleasantly dry with a very light herbal note set off by a kiss of peppery yeasty spice. Lean pilsner malt and a touch of light lemon peel and vanilla. It’s got a nice dry body and is surprisingly tasty. I have to say I’m very impressed and surprised. It could be punchier but it’s certainly a solid interpretation.
