COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
f.k.a. Left Hand Oak Aged Imperial Stout

GOOD MORNING. YOU’VE WOKEN UP DEAD. YOU’RE IN RUINS. On the brink of catastrophe. But don’t be discouraged. You are ripe for a revolution! Just like the Bolsheviks of the early 1900’s, our barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout doesn’t happen overnight. Patience is required. Wake Up Dead hibernates in our cellars for over 12 months before being blended to woody perfection. Hints of raisins, cherry, licorice and toffee, followed by earthy, herbal hop notes that rise up, joining in your fight for a better life. Don’t be afraid of the dark. All power to the stouts!

A hazy brown beer with a small disappearing brown head. The aroma is sweet matly with mainly coffee notes, but also hints of bourbon. The flavor has distinct bourbon character mixed in with the notes of coffee and chocolate while the alcohol burns the tongue. Just a notch better than the standard Imperial Stout.

UPDATED: JUL 30, 2008 (Bottle 75 cl) Unclear, dark brown and opaque with a weak tint of red. Nice, creamy, beige head. Vinous, port-like nose. Lovely fullness with lots of roasted malt and a harmonious balance between the dryness of the burned malt and the sweetness. Vague fusty, artisanal notes. Overripe plums and dates and prunes. The barrel aging has definitely changed this, but I still find the original a better beer. 031205 and 260708

From bottle #8 at sk8vikings American blind tasting. Poura dark brown with lacing tan to white head. Dense chocolate and vanilla aroma. Spiced and chocolate malt in the initial flavour. Smooth and roasted to chocolate malty. Roasted lingering finish. Nice and easy.

Bottled (thanks omhper). Very deep rubyish amber colour, small brown head. Aroma is quite big on the malts, liquorice, alcohol and some wooden notes. Flavour is plum, ashes, roasted malts, alcohol, wood and some vanilla. Actually a very nice left hand brew!

Bottled. Dark black. Vanilla wood and licorice up front. Sweet and roasty with clean, rounded mouthfeel. Super rich with balanced woodiness, but simple straight forward malt character. Bitter coffee finish.

Bottle. Aroma is a little moldy. Unclear, very dark brown colour. Peppery, slightly cardboardy flavour. Sweetish aftertaste. I prefer the non-oaked version.

Brown to dark amber color. The aroma improves a little, with some vanilla touch, light Madeira, showing the roasted malt as the regular. The flavor is essentially caramel and caramel, not complex enough, a bit astringent at the end, too much carbonation, a bit coffeish. Quite good. Thanks Jens (Ungstrup) for sharing this bottle.
