f.k.a. Left Hand Oak Aged Imperial Stout

GOOD MORNING. YOU’VE WOKEN UP DEAD. YOU’RE IN RUINS. On the brink of catastrophe. But don’t be discouraged. You are ripe for a revolution! Just like the Bolsheviks of the early 1900’s, our barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout doesn’t happen overnight. Patience is required. Wake Up Dead hibernates in our cellars for over 12 months before being blended to woody perfection. Hints of raisins, cherry, licorice and toffee, followed by earthy, herbal hop notes that rise up, joining in your fight for a better life. Don’t be afraid of the dark. All power to the stouts!

Appearance: burnt browns and liquid charcoal. Small fizzy tan head fades into a thin collar with nothing in-between. Garnet glints at the bottom. Swirls along the sides with no lace.
Nose: chocolate candies – the kind one is filled with liqueur such as Kahlua. A bit fizzy. Vanilla along the edges – more extract than root. Chocolate cherry vanilla cola. Generic woodsy rusticity. A bit simple.
Palate: creamy and fizzy like cherry vanilla cola. Grabs back of my throat with vanilla extract and Kahlua filled chocolate candies. Raw boozy woods followed by caramel, vanilla, and milk chocolate all melted into one. Hint of tartness and tannins in the back. A bit quick to hit with the flavor and equally quick to fade into nothing. Rustic in the middle and boozy and spicy. Fizzy sweet cola stickiness never really disappears from around the edges – a bit of a distraction.
Final Thoughts: pretty good but a bit muddled and rough around the edges. Flavors were there and they were good but they just didn’t quite meet in harmony.

Bomber from HEB Pin Oak in Katy, TX. Poured into a teku glass. Appearance is dark black with thin white slightly tan head. Aroma of heavy booze and smoked malt. Taste dominated by booze of the first note then dissapates into a intertwined oak and smoked malt notes finishes boozy. I would imagine this would age gracefully.

750ml bottle, taste. This is a 750ml bottle labeled 2007 brandy cask aged Imperial Stout. Brown color. Thin bubbly off-white head. Good chocolate, cookie dough, spicy, caramel. Medium to bigger body. Light carbonation, mild slick. Some wamrth. Moderate-plus sweet taste. Lighter bitter, some warmth. Solid, but showing age.

Well balanced and barreling is well done but not a whole lot going on here in terms of being unique or original. Pours black with great mocha head and lacing. Creamy consistency. Easy drinking and well hidden booze. Finishes lightly bittersweet. Tap at Scion.

Pours a hearty black with 1/4 inch of medium tan head that faded fairly quickly into sparse wisps and med-thin collar. Pretty good legs, but only fair lacing. Aroma is warm woody bourbon, earthy/roasty/smoky malt, and black coffee. Taste is that roasty/smoky malt, bitter coffee, licorice, burnt hair and boozey heat. Not terrible, just unbalanced. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, that high alcohol definitely shows and it’s a touch over carbonated.

Alcohol is mellowed out by the barrel aging. Nice carbonation and dried fruit overtones.

Bottle. Pours black with tan head. Aroma is roasty, vanilla, cocoa, sweet. Taste is sweet with a touch of bitterness on the finish, a bit of wood tannin, not over oaked but still present, full bodied, medium carbonation. Overall, tasty.

22 oz bottle, Pours opaque with ruby edges. Soapy tan head, moderate lacing.
Aroma is creamy coffee, oak, vanilla, alcohol.
Flavor is milk chocolate covered cherries, bitter coffee, oaky tanins, light roasted grain. Faint minty, herbal hops. Not sure it will age that well, but I’m going to try anyway.

Draught. Inky black with small foamy beige head, faint caramel aroma for which you reallly have to strain yourself, low carbonation, thick body, caramel-mocha flavored rum-like taste, long finish with strong alcohol aftertaste. Very satisfyingly rich and strong.

"a nice beer for sure, but not an elite impy stout. actually poured lighter than an earlire oatmeal stout, but is pretty big on chocolate/licorice.raisiny aroma. hops and roasted malt also present in the flavor. pretty smooth, alcohol eveident but not overdone."

Jet Black with one finger creamy off white head. Aroma is roasty, with faint bitter chocolate. Notes of caramel and plums and dark cherries. Body is medium, but mouth feel is creamy. Taste is bitter hops, slight coffee, dark fruit, cherry, bitter chocolate, roast notes, caramel. Sticky sweet on the lips. Slight alcohol phenols. Good though.
