Thinnest pour known to stouts. Transparent caramel brown with a few wisps for the head. Aroma is alcohol, tin and a little chocolate, but overall, there’s nothing compelling me to taste it. Luckily, flavor pans out more positively. Mocha espresso, dark chocolate bark and black cherries flavors. Some expressive tendencies of currants and molasses mixed with sour milk. Syrupy body. Balance seems to be off, but I can’t place it. Warming fudge brownie finish transitions to a bad tongue chafing. Just because you can brew it doesn’t mean you should.

Whew! Pours thick with nice lacing around the glass. Aroma is red wine with slight plum flavor. Taste is a stale combination of barley wine and out-dated fruit with cheap chocolate thrown it the mix. Not good.

UPDATED: JUL 22, 2005 Deep dark amber with little to no head, which I guess is to be expected with 10.4% ABV. First of all this is one BIG bastard of a beer. Aroma is raisony and a little alcohol. Flavor is a big wallop of chocolate & some alcohol but not so much so that you feel the burn. Maybe a little cherry too? This one could really use some roastiness & thicker body to balance out the overwhelming sweetness.. I expect that from Imp. Stouts. Glad I tried it but overall, there are better out there that I’d reach for first.

This is the first Impy I’ve had that doesn’t pour oil can black - but rather with moderate amounts of tan/crimson hues on the edges of the tulip. Could this be a sign of interesting things to come? The aroma is unique as well - really earthy notes mix well with hints of fresh baked cookies and cookie dough. The body is absolutely scrumptious. I’m first hit with a wall of mocha, then roastiness, then bitterness. 1, 2, 3....bham! The body is so complex, yet each flavor stands perfectly on its own. Silky smooth mouthfeel completes this new perfect beer. (Maybe the Oaked Aged version IS the perfect version!)

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights. You can barely see some yeast floaties in there. It has a small fizzy brown head that quickly dissipates to a collar then completely diminishes.
The aroma is chocolate, figs, cherries, and wood with a slight hint of alcohol.
The flavor is bitter anise and some chalky chocolate and a touch of sweet dark fruit. There is a strong smokey alcohol flavor that is a little overbearing. The nouthfeel is thin to medium-bodied and not very carbonated with a sticky, bitter,chalky finish.
Overall, I did not like this nearly as well as the Oak Aged version. This was too sharp and biting in comparison to the mellowed out oak-aged version. I couldn’t get past the chalky bitterness and the strong alcohol.

3 year old bottle that aged nicely. Somewhat vinous nose. Big roasted character in the first sip. Medium bodied with a little oiliness to it. Alcohol seemed a little burning. Very drinkable.

UPDATED: JUL 13, 2005 Thin, quickly reducing head of very fine bubbles. Nice roasty aroma with some lactose, rubber?, molasses and roasted malts. Dark brown/black in color. Thick, creamy, mouthfeel with more roasted grains, dark chocolate and a slight sourness. Pretty sweet. Hides its alcohol very well. Finish is roasty and creamy with a hint of coffee and milky sweetnes. Pretty good but I have had better imperial stouts.

Couleur brune opaque, faible mousse beige pale. Puissants aromes de toffee, de mélasse, de poivre noir et d’herbes sur un discret fond brűlé. Flaveurs terreuses, mélasse, malt hautement torréfié, caramel brűlé. Corps d’épaisseur allant de semi mince ŕ moyenne, faible carbonatation. Alcool présent en rétro olfaction. Dark with a thin head and light lacing. Aroma is roasted malt with a hop presence, rather mild as a whole. Flavor is quite malty, moderately hopped (fairly subdued hoppieness for the style), very nice tones of chocolate, toffee, and dark fruits (cherry, fig, and most predominatly raspberry). Lightly smoked with an alcohol presence. Finishes smooth and warming with some lingering vanilla. A little thin and watery on the pallate, but other than an excpetional beer.

On tap at the brewery tasting room. 5 oz. glass. Not opaque golden brown with a tan head that completely and utterly disappears after a while. Chocolate and cabernet sauvignon aroma is unique; it’s definitely more woody and winey than a port smell. Full body with a port-ish feel, subtle dark fruits and golden raisin in the flavor. Chocolate malt and bittering hops in the finish, which is nicely dry. Some honey character emerges in the finish as well, which was also nice. Very smooth and sublte, except for the very noticable alcohol. This is not what I was expecting; it’s not the huge roasty impy like Yeti. It’s enjoyable and unique in my experience, but not mind blowing and somewhat tiring to drink (and that’s from a tasting glass).
