4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
355ml bottle from Good Spirits Wine & Beer (Glasgow):
Strong with lots of flavour, although it was a touch thinner than expected & not as complex. There was some nice roasted malts but the dark fruits coupled with the vanilla sweetness were what came out on top. The beer was definitely a nice one with good balance but it’s probably not quite on par with some of the better imperial stouts out there if I’m honest & as such I’d probably not pick it up again; it was still a good beer though & I wonder if the regular version would be any different from this nitro one.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tap at Stanley’s Blackout with commonshawn. 8 oz pour. Dark, dark brown...essentially black. Creamy, light tan head...almost a full finger. Served too cold which is slightly annoying. Aroma is subdued but brings to mind a raisin sweetness with maybe some roasted nuts. Smells like a dangerous stout. Taste has an interesting blend of dark fruits like raisins or prunes, dark chocolate bitterness, and a healthy dose of alcohol warmth. Commonshawn remarked it’s more like a Belgian variety with imperial stout tendencies. Hard to disagree with him.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Very dark brown, minimal head. Aroma roasted malt and coffee. Medium full body. A little alcohol. Fairly dry. Malt and mocha predominate, a little fruitiness in the background. Finish remains on the dry side. Nothing to complain about, missing some complexity.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
NITRO version. Pitch black pour. No volume to speak of, good lacing but world class retention for what it has.
Very good nose of cocoa, chocolate, light roast and caramel.
Full body with a silky smooth texture that is almost creamy. Little effervescence in the middle but the finish is a prickly tightly bubbled burst of modest intensity.
The flavor profile is borderline outstanding since the alcohol is not covered well enough. It begins with a blend of chocolate and cocoa that is bitter initially but becomes slightly sweet by the middle. The middle is slightly bitter with roast being the primary component. As the bitterness fades, malt sweetness appears along with hints of dark fruit (raisin, prune). The finish is where uncovered alcohol makes the strongest influence, including the burn at the back of the throat. The finish is a slow fade of semi-sweet chocolate that becomes rather astringent from the alcohol leaving a medicinal aftertaste.
