COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Here’s a black ale to brighten your day. Wake Up Dead lurks in our cellars for over 4 months before being unleashed. Hints of raisins, black licorice, coffee and dark chocolate are followed by earthy, herbal hop notes. Any apprehensions about the rest of your day are quickly forgotten, for whatever the mind expects, it finds. Sometimes you’re not in the mood for what everyone else is having.

I’ve never been that impressed with Left Hand brews. They seem either overly complex or overly simple. There’s no middle ground. On the other hand, it’s easily available. Given a choice, I’d drink something else.

Black motor oil, fine, toasted marshmallow head, 1cm thick. Aroma is salty (oyster?), soy sauce, light cocoa, leafy greenery, moss, walnuts, touch of cocoa, hint of molasses. Body is medium-heavy, oily-starchy, light, medium-fine carbonation, light-to-no burn. Flavor is a zesty, dry hardwood bitter herbs, and twig sap, with some neutral sweetness to balance. A tad bit bitter after a while, actually.

This is almost everything I am looking for in a beer. Taste, appearance, strength, etc. I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s the "perfect" beer, but only one or two steps down....for me. Not super dark black like most stouts, but a very dark brown- maybe small hints of amber in the color. It is pretty thick but not overwhelmingly dense. Taste is both sweet and bitter...hard to tell which is more. Maybe slightly more on the bitter end. Oh yeah, did I mention the strength? If you are looking for something in the 14-20% range this may not be for you, but at 10% I’d recommend only drinking one 20oz. at a time....or splitting one with a buddy.
