The first of my two bottles, this pours golden with a decent head into a small Samichlaus snifter. Toffee and aged hops -- but less cheesy than would be the case with an overhopped American style barleywine -- dominate the aroma. Flavor is quite nice, the oak well-integrated (I was fearing over-the-top oak chips a la oak arrogant bastard, and that is definitely NOT what one gets here), relatively-low-for-a-barleywine abv well hidden on the tongue. Roughly the right degree of bitter metallic hops on the late finish.
I had basically zero hopes for this one, and relative to that I’m not only favorably impressed, I’m quite favorably impressed. This has aged very nicely.

2003 Bottle...pours a murky amber/caramel with a thin off white head. Aroma has light perfumey fruit and a touch of cardboard. Flavor has candied fruit, caramel, and cardboard. Mouthfeel is medium and watery with an earthy/candied fruit finish.

2009 bottle. Pours hazy golden brown with thin head. Smell is a rich big nose...caramel and prunes. Taste is some mild hop bite with caramel and some fruit structure. Dry oaky finish. Full body with nice mellow carbonation. Nice brew with 4 years on it.

Finally! one of my long searches came to an end when I sampled this at Raleigh Rare and Vintage 2013. Clear golden pour with a fair layer of near clear head. Lightly fruity aroma with some honey notes. Sweet and semi-syrupy. woody tannens and a bit boozy, but deceptively mellow and smooth. Definitely oxidized. Guess 10 years of sitting around can do that. Not as good as I was hoping for, but now I can finally tick it off the bucketlist!

Draught. This is a decent barley wine that just missed the marking in cracking the top tier of the style.

2003 bottle, rrbf. One of the few true vintage beers at the fest. I poured some for peeps for about 10 mins before Mary Eliza came by and regulated. haha. Definitely tastes like a nicely aged barley wine. Turns more English as it ages, losing its bitter hops and a gaining more brown sugar, dark fruit, and vanilla type flavors. Only lightly oxidized, thankfully. A little thin on the palate, but solid.

Bottle from 2003. Light copper color. Very smooth. Age has really mellowed this out. Not a cigar beer at this point. Very nice.

2002 aged bottle
Hazy copper color, off-white head. Fruity, apricot scent. Fruity, apricot taste. Medium mouthfeel, medium bitterness. Warming alcohol.
Super nice, oh so nice, aged super.

Amber/copper pour..off white head. Nice caramel malts and sweetness, some molasses and a slight bit of vanilla. Awesome!

Bouteille de 660ml (ou presque) partagée par le SlovakSniper. Édition 2009. Bière orangée avec un anneau de mousse. Le nez de ce barley wine est tout en bois. Il empeste le bois mouillé, la vieux fût de bourbon. Il reste une trace de fruits rouges derrière tout ce bois. La bouche est mince, liquide, mangé par la barrique. Le liquide est abrasif, piquant et acide. Les tanins sont d’une astringence digne d’une pelure de banane. Il y a trop de bois dans cette bière. 4+/10
