MadIndian (987), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 21, 2007 Sampled at the Newtown Brewfest 07 with Stegosaurus. Amber pour white head. Blah blah blah. Sweetmalty aroma with a mild hop presence. It was smooth but just ok. argo0 (6861), Washington DC, USA Oct 8, 2007 (KSq07, draft) Clear mahogany body with medium beige head, nice lacing. Aroma is medium sweet, caramel, spice, nut, faint anise. Taste is medium sweet, nut, some spice, caramel. Light-medium body. jason (1620), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 26, 2007 .Draught at Which Brew. Pours a dark brown body with thin head. Aroma is smokey malt, light hops. Flavor is nutty, hoppy, smokey, sweet malt. Light nutty bite to it. mtoast (290), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 12, 2007 On cask, 9/11/07. Pours a hazy mahoghany brown with white-ish foam that leave fantastic lacing. Aroma is all over the place, lots of malt with some herbal hop notes buried in there. Initial flavor is almost a shock, really big malt profile bordering on overly sweet with a fairly big bitter finish. As the pints dwindles, the flavors meld a little bit, but are still in sharp contrast. Only 4.5%? Not buying that, I would have put it around 6%. DeadGuyFrank (347), http://westchesterbeer.com, USA Sep 9, 2007 Updated: Oct 1, 2007Recently had this at the Chester County SPCA fest; I did not know this has a altbier - tasted more like a hopped up version of a brown ale. Sweet tastting and slightly hoppy. Quite tasty as a session beer and I can see myself drinking this at a bar for a couple of hours. LinusStick (1831), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 19, 2007 On tap at Bocktown. Not a good representation of this style that I’ve grown to love. Pour was a dark brown with a decent white head. Aroma was almost non-existent. Taste was slightly bitter, heavily carbonated and not very strong. Beer seems to change to water in mid sip and not much of an aftertaste. I’ve had altbiers that blew me away...this does not compare. cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 22, 2007 Updated: Dec 31, 2007This was on tap at the Bocktown in the Robinson shopping complex. Pour is dark brown with reddish hints. Has a creamy off white head that is mostly composed of fine bubbles. However a few medium size ones give it some personality. The aroma is very interesting & pleasing, lovely sweet fruity berry with malt roastyness in there. I never expected that olfactory impact! The taste is not quite as usual as the other alts I’ve had. It also does not taste like it smells. I would have pegged this as a fruit beer. A medium bitterness greets the tongue. Is that hop of bitter malt? It’s difficult to tell, both may be present. The fruitiness in the aroma is pretty much absent in the taste, never smelled an alt like this. Even tho alt is one of my faves, this is a little bitterer than I like. Alts usually do not have such a fruity aroma and the aroma makes you expect some sweet fruit on the tongue. Finish seems medium bitter and difficult to like. If you are into IPA or imp stout, this may be attractive to you but it seems to be overly impressive for the likes of my alts. Medicinal linger for a few moments after the last drink. Southampton Secret Ale, Erie Brewing Heritage Alt and Schell Schmaltzs Alt are all better than this for flavors. The aroma however is better than any those have to offer.
DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 29, 2007 Draft at DRE. This one pours deep brown with minimal off-white head. Aroma is caramel malt, slight brown sugary and figgy fruit. The flavor starts roasty caramel malty, somewhat earthy and nutty, and picks up some finishing hop notes. Smooth and crisp.
