22 oz. bottle from Total Wine in Norfolk (2009 bottle at 15.3%). Brownish orange pour with a thin off-white head. Aroma of tangerines, caramel, sweet malt, vanilla, and bourbon. The flavor is big and alcoholic; whiskey comes to mind first with this one. Some citrus and vanilla in the flavor as well. Noticeable alcohol warming. Not my favorite barleywine but certainly a strong effort from Legend.

Legend’s barleywine is a massive affair, pouring a murky dark mahogany, the huge alcohol content supports a small fizzy head for only a fleeting moment. Aroma is complex and rife with whiskey, raisins, coffee, prunes, and dark cherry. Hot with alcohol and quite bitter, the hops still don’t have the umpf to cut the huge amount of sweet malt here.

12 oz bottle 13% abv purchased at Libbie Market. The barlywine poured a deep reddish brown. Very little head and a sweet aroma of prunes or plums. The higher alcohol has a numbing affect as you drink the ale. Sweetness of prunes and raisins with little or no hops in the taste. Medium body with soft carbonation. Smooth finish a sweet aftertaste. This is local a product but a class of beers that I have limited experience.

Aromas of raspberries, cherries, blackberries, black cherries, and cola, with a subtle nuance of vanilla. Appearance is almost black, with purplish tint, and off-white/light tan head foam. Taste is quite sweet and fruity, with flavors similar to Australian Shiraz, with slight notes of nuts and toffee, and a booze-driven spiciness. A plump, lively carbonated beer, fruity and boozy with very slight hop prevalence, and an off-dry, fruity, lingering finish. Attests very well (as I can only imagine) to the old English standard that beers can be crafted, absolutely, in order to sit side-by-side with complex European wines.

(Sample Date: 11/7/2010 Source:Legend Brewery) Richmond Beerhistoric Tour. Legend 2010 Barleywine. Grape notes with a slight sourness in the aroma with spicy yeast character and caramelized sugars. Very clear golden with ring of white head. Flavor follows aroma with a medium finish that dries quickly and a bit of warming.

Draught at Legend Brew Co. Copper Orange with thin orange-white head. Big hop citrus aroma with a lot of booze and floral hop notes... also some sweeter caramel malt. Flavor dominated by sweet syrup and booze...NO balance

Tap @ Legend. Dark brown witcreamy mocha head. Dissipates. Smells like buttered rum. Sweet but followed by a hop stop. Boozy. (Tasting note- the Tabasco from dinner is still hanging around so I may not have the clearest palate.)

Impressive at 15.3. Certainly a beer that would do better with some bottle refinement. On tap this beer is abrasive. Not overly sweet or bitter, it’s incredibly well-balanced for such power. Legend should experiment more.

Bottle at the Houston BA Tasting in October. Pours a cloudy brown with a tan head. Nose is of roast malt and caramel malt. Taste is the same. Mouthfeel is chewy, yet sticky sweet.
