Bottle courtesy of ksurkin pours deep clear gold with off white head. The aroma is pears, apples, wheated malts and some boozy heat at the end of the draw. The taste has a mead like sensation along with sweet malts, apples, pears, floral hops and booze. Pretty interesting barleywine for sure.

Bottle @ THE Barley Wine Tasting. Massive thanks to Ken for bringing this behemoth to our battle of the barley wines. The pourís deep reddish brown with a small white head. The nose is suprisingly floral, hoppy. Some warm wood, boozy barrel. The taste is sweet bearclaw donut. Runny sweet toffee malt flavors, some cocoa and cherry. Chocolate. Boozy lightly dry woody finish. Fulll body, big beer. To be honest, Iím quite impressed by how this beer carries the ABV. Itís not overbearing. A fine sipper.

From the bottled poured a cloudy brown brew with a thin beige head. Malty sweet aroma. Full bodied, very sweet, and a pleasant hoppy finish.

Bottle at the Houston BA Tasting in October. Pours a cloudy brown with a tan head. Nose is of roast malt and caramel malt. Taste is the same. Mouthfeel is chewy, yet sticky sweet.

22oz bottle, 2009 edition, from total wine in norfolk. pours a syrupy, reddish copper with a thin, whispy white head leaving a ring of lace. aroma is very nice and very sweet with notes of toffee malts, red berries, honey, vanilla icing, boozy cognac, and hints of candied pineapple. flavor is surprisingly nice and not nearly as sweet as the aroma with notes of orange citrus, apple cider, and sweet toffee with hints of earthy hops, cherry brandy, and a sweet, malty finish. palate is full bodied and very sticky with some hot booze but not 15.3% hot. overall, a solid bold, fruity barley wine from the legend guys.

Bottle-2009. Yeasty raisin and orange aroma. Hazy ochre, thin yellow head. Full body. Deliciously fruity flavor of grapefruit, cherries, and brown sugar with a bready base. Tastefully bitter orange peel finish. Itís a bit like liquid fruitcake and a nice choice for Christmas. Alcohol evident but tolerable and tastes nowhere near the 15.3% on the label . Re-rate: This is a dangerous drink. It didnít seem to have as much alcohol as advertised, but I felt it an hour later, and it had me walking sideways. Inbibe carefully.

22 oz. bottle from Total Wine in Norfolk (2009 bottle at 15.3%). Brownish orange pour with a thin off-white head. Aroma of tangerines, caramel, sweet malt, vanilla, and bourbon. The flavor is big and alcoholic; whiskey comes to mind first with this one. Some citrus and vanilla in the flavor as well. Noticeable alcohol warming. Not my favorite barleywine but certainly a strong effort from Legend.

12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market, Charlottesville, VA. Pours a hazy dark reddish amber color with a thin tan head. Decent head retention around the edges but it eventually fades to nothing and leaves little lacing. Very fruity aroma with notes of berries, plums, green apple and pear, as well as some toffee, sugar notes and a bit of booze. The taste is big, huge malty notes, brown sugar, toffee, pear, apple, berries and some booze. Some faint chocolate sneaks in there eventually. Full bodied. Pretty hot beer and one that could probably benefit from some aging.

on tap CAH-light tan head and murky amber. Aroma is fruit-raisin/apple, sweet medium malt. Taste follows with an alcohol warming and some abrasiveness/bite.

Aromas of raspberries, cherries, blackberries, black cherries, and cola, with a subtle nuance of vanilla. Appearance is almost black, with purplish tint, and off-white/light tan head foam. Taste is quite sweet and fruity, with flavors similar to Australian Shiraz, with slight notes of nuts and toffee, and a booze-driven spiciness. A plump, lively carbonated beer, fruity and boozy with very slight hop prevalence, and an off-dry, fruity, lingering finish. Attests very well (as I can only imagine) to the old English standard that beers can be crafted, absolutely, in order to sit side-by-side with complex European wines.
