3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BlackForestCO (944) - Aurora, Colorado, USA - JUN 16, 2008
UPDATED: FEB 25, 2009 Bottle thanks to miketd. Poured a deep caramle brown color with a moderate beige head that diminished to a layer and left some lacing. Nice caramel malt aroma, but not much else. Smooth caramel malt entry with undertones of fruit (apple, grape) leading into a lightly bitter, earthy hop finish with some lingering grape on the finish. Smooth, a bit light on the palate. No sign of the alcohol. Thanks Mike.

Dark amber/tawny color with a thin, mostly lasting foam. Mostly malt accented nose, with hints of caramel, dough and toffee. Flavor is nicely balanced, very malty sweet, with hints of caramel and toffee, even a confusing hint of spice. Fairly complex and well crafted. It’s a nice offering.

2007 Vintage via trade with Kmweaver, thanks Ken. Shared dalkeliz, and my girlfriend Cyn. Says 10.5% on the bottle seems crazy, so I don’t know. Pours deep copper with a light tan head. The nose is nice and light and nice overall. Taste is sweet with some caramel and some dark fruit but its too hot right now. I should have put this down longer, but it isn’t terrible now, its just a bit too in my face. As it warms i’m raising my rating.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Ibrew2or3 (4699) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - MAY 3, 2008
Courtesy of Degarth. You ROCK!! my friend. Pours deep clear copper with nice tan head. The aroma is nice and rich with caramel, sticky sweet malts, mildly roasted malts, mild pine hops and faint dark fruity esters. The taste has sweet sticky malts followed by a load of roasted to caramel malts and mild melded blunted pine hop bitterness. Very nice. Near the finish the dark fruity esters show up to create a pleasing bookend to the experience.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 fishingnet (1047) - Brandon, Florida, USA - APR 9, 2008
Bottle courtesy Degarth. Pours a clear amber with a one finger light tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of sweet malt, caramel, and a hint of floral hops. Taste is sweet malt, caramel, earthy hops, and toffee. Medium mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness and well hidden alcohol. Very good.

Bottle: The aroma is strange combination of cinnamon buns, butter, caramel, and grain. It pours a mostly transparent brownish-red with a touch of haze and a small off-white head that leaves behind spotty lacing. Wow...the flavor is rough. Butterscotch and faint caramel up front with a strange plastic and an acidic citrus finish. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Not the worst beer I’ve tasted, but it’s up there.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 drewbeerme (3262) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 3, 2008
22oz bottle, late 2007 vintage. a ruby with foamy off white head appearance. aroma of toasted malts, citrusy hop notes, and mild oxidation starting. flavor profile is made up of toasted malts and citrusy hops, mild cardboard thing starting, with a cookie finish. good carbonation level, slick and sometimes heavy body. the toasted malts and citrusy hops aren’t melding that well, but this isn’t a bad barleywine by any means.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 dmac (2510) - Toms River, New Jersey, USA - APR 1, 2008
2007 vintage shared at Cornboys Barley Wine Blind. Pours a clear brown with a foamy off white head. Malty caramel and hoppy pineapple dominate the aroma. Flavor has hints of caramel, butterscotch and fruit. For my ratings at the blind this one would be on the higher side of the middle of the pack. Pretty enjoyable but could probably use some time to let the hops calm down some.
