3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 ThisWangsChung (448) - Leonardtown, Maryland, USA - DEC 27, 2012
Reviewed 12/16/2012. 12 oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.
A: Pours a dark ruby red color with a nice opacity in spite of its shade. I think the head is quite beautiful, a one finger light khaki shade that retains itself in a consistent manner. Lacing is good, as well.
S: Surprisingly peppery - the black pepper component is pretty strong here. Beneath that lies some pleasant nuttiness (I’d say something along the lines of pecan and almond) and even a touch of lemongrass. A bit strange in its construction, but not offputting.
T: The nut flavor is what dominates, first and foremost. Afterwards, the nuttiness will roll into a slight tartness. The finish has a balanced bitterness, keeping the sweetness in check without becoming harsh. A vague cream flavor is on the aftertaste - creating the suggestion that this seems well layered, if not complex. Very, very good, and much better than what the aroma suggested.
M: Creamy smooth at first, before finishing clean and dry. Carbonation could be toned down ever so faintly. Otherwise, the general feel of the palate is quite pleasant, avoiding the excess chalkiness prevalent in some browns.
O: I admit, this one caught me off guard a bit. Aromatically, it’s not much cop, but the flavor and texture helps compensate. Very good in general.

a brothy kind of scotch pudding with some sweetness and more character. a murky cola/tea color (not appealing) with a walnut and walnut husk flavor that seems demonstrative and appropriate. modest body at best with a wisp of carbonation near the end and a mild bitter wood finish.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20 DavoleBomb (1389) - Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 13, 2012
Poured into a snifter.
4.0 A: Clear deep mahogany brown color. Two and a half fingers of frothy off-white head. Retention is good and plenty of lacing is left.
3.5 S: Nutty with a dry toastiness. Grainy malts and quite clean. Not a whole lot of flavor, but what is there is quite nice.
3.0 T: Taste is like the nose. Nutty, toasty, and dry. Grainy. Again it’s not very intense, but it’s well made and tasty.
4.5 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Extraordinarily creamy for what the body is and super smooth.
3.5 D: Decent beer with a great mouthfeel, but could use more intensity in the taste.
