COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The is a pretty beer almost an amber/brown color. A well balanced beer that is great for the summer months. Unlike the porter, this is the beer that put them on the map.

Reviewed 12/16/2012. 12 oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip. A: Pours a dark ruby red color with a nice opacity in spite of its shade. I think the head is quite beautiful, a one finger light khaki shade that retains itself in a consistent manner. Lacing is good, as well. S: Surprisingly peppery - the black pepper component is pretty strong here. Beneath that lies some pleasant nuttiness (I’d say something along the lines of pecan and almond) and even a touch of lemongrass. A bit strange in its construction, but not offputting. T: The nut flavor is what dominates, first and foremost. Afterwards, the nuttiness will roll into a slight tartness. The finish has a balanced bitterness, keeping the sweetness in check without becoming harsh. A vague cream flavor is on the aftertaste - creating the suggestion that this seems well layered, if not complex. Very, very good, and much better than what the aroma suggested. M: Creamy smooth at first, before finishing clean and dry. Carbonation could be toned down ever so faintly. Otherwise, the general feel of the palate is quite pleasant, avoiding the excess chalkiness prevalent in some browns. O: I admit, this one caught me off guard a bit. Aromatically, it’s not much cop, but the flavor and texture helps compensate. Very good in general.

Served in pint glass, dark reddish brown with thin head. Little aroma, mild taste, deceptive ABV. Clean finish, easy to drink. But still a non-distinctive beer within its style, lots of better competitors.

Bottle at a canal side tapas restaurant in Richmond, VA. Medium body with an average taste. Nothing outstanding.

Transfer from BA review on 7-15-12- Poured from bomber into pint glass Appearance – Pours a medium to deep brown color with a billowy off white head. The head fades relatively fast initially but thickens, and fades more slowly over time. It does eventually fade however and leaves a medium amount of lacing. Smell – The smell of this one is quite delicious. It has a nice roasted malt base with sweet toffee accents. Caramel, brown bread, and light coffee aroma are there as well. A wonderful roasty sweet smell. Taste – A sweeter brown sugar and brown bread flavor meet the tongue. These form a base for the taste and are present throughout. Notes of the toffee and caramel come and go as the taste moves on with at the end the taste bittering up ever so lightly; bringing on some more roasted flavors. Mouthfeel – The carbonation level of this brew is a bit on the higher side with the body on the mid to higher side as well. The carbonation level creates a more refreshing style at a little expense to the creamier and roasty flavors of the body. Overall – Very easy drinking with great flavors and aromas.

Bottle - Hoppy, dry, nutty flavor to this one. For me this is one of my go to favorite beers to drink on a regular basis. I love the slight bit and flavor on this one.

Caramel and stale fruit. Some burned sugar. At least it looked brown... Tried this at the DC beerfest with Jess, Mark, and Matt in 2014.

355 ml bottle in Vienna, VA. Pours a dark brown with a creamy tan head that lingers. Aroma is molasses, caramel, bread, malty notes. Its pretty light, and the taste is exactly like the aroma, very drinkable, but nothing really stands out to me about this beer. Palate is smooth.
