COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The is a pretty beer almost an amber/brown color. A well balanced beer that is great for the summer months. Unlike the porter, this is the beer that put them on the map.

22oz bottle. Golden brown with a loose cream head that fades quickly; rich malty aroma, with some earthy caramel; strongly malty flavour with burnt toffee; and a clean lightly hopped finish. A rather good brown ale.

On draft at the brewery. Pours a nice clear reddish brown with ring of whitish head. Nose of caramel and brown sugar follows in the flavor. Very robust and toasty. Crisp, yet filling. Malty bitter finish. Certainly lives up to the hype.

Copper brown pour with some haze and one finger of sandstone head. Lots of diacetyl in the nose with some leafy herbal hop character and toasted grain. Super buttery/caramelly flavor. No me gusta. Bleh

Bottle; poured a brownish color with small to medium creamy head. Aroma was light; caramel and nuts. Not a big fan of the style and this is version is nothing special. Flavor of caramel, chocolate and not much else. Mouthfeel was a little off. Expected a bit more from them.

Bottle. Copperish amber with a small creamy white head. Nose is carmel, bready malts, metallic sourness. Flavor is more off and all over the place. No idea on the age of this bottle but I’d guess under a year, could be much younger but who knows. A very English feel, or maybe it’s just infected.

SHIG (2707) - Anchorage, Alaska, USA - NOV 11, 2011
Bottle: Clear brown with a thin off white head. Aroma was light malts. Taste was not impactful at all light malts, wet, some sour tons. Wonder if the bottle was paste its BB date.

UPDATED: SEP 15, 2004 On tap, pours a nice copperish brown, pretty but quickly diminishing head. Hardly anything at all on the nose worth mentioning. The taste is earthy, the malt nicely balancing the bitterness of the hops. Touch of chocolate on the finish. Improves as warms up. Bit rough on the palate. Enjoyable, and quite subtle in its flavorings. Good with food, one of my local favorites. NOTE: This stuff is utterly different on cask, with a really nice earthy hop thing going on. The brewer also tends to dry hop the cask version with whatever is laying around, which always makes for an interesting sample. Recommended if available.

Dark, perfectly clear copper. Good off-white head. Malty, very low hoppiness. Slightly astringent. Caramel and a bit of molasses.

UPDATED: FEB 28, 2010 650ml bottle. Thick and rich brown color. Nice creamy head. Tangy and fruity flavors that I’m assuming come from the Legend yeast work much better in this beer than in the porter. This beer is full bodied, rich, and still remains highly drinkable. Great session brown ale. re-rate 2/10...looks completely filtered out, thin and a very enjoyable, easy mouthfeel. Clean, thankfully lacks the sticky mouthfeel due to the over-use of specialty malts a lot of brown ales suffer from. Still a great session BA,

obguthr (2583) - Poquoson, Virginia, USA - MAY 19, 2007
Va BF 07 Draft: Strange rubber and mixed nut aroma. Pours light brown, almost gold, with a light beige head and good lacing. Nice caramel and hop balance. Hop finish. Thin mouthfeel.
