4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 CamdenD (825) - Madrid, SPAIN - JUL 19, 2004
Super CRISP IPA. Hides the alcohol very well and rocks your taste buds. A full-tasting IPA that can still sneak up onto you due to the lack of up-front alcohol. Haven’t had this in over a year, but drank it consistently at UR -- great beer.
4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 jeffc666 (1984) - Fairfax, Virginia, USA - JUL 9, 2004
UPDATED: SEP 20, 2004 Pale clear golden body topped by a medium foamy head. Glass lacing is above average. ery interestng aroma. Loads of hops and an almost sour-sweet weird aroma. The flavor is wallop of hops with some nutty malts. This might be the most surprising beer I have had in a long while. It looks like a golden ale, has tons of hops, has a very big body, especially given the color, and is 7% abv! That abv is not at all notiecable either. This beer is really a sleeper IMO. From a technical standpoint this beer must be very difficult to get right. Kudos to the brewer. N.B., as the ratings atest, this is a love it or hate it beer. Don;t say I did not warn you!
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 DocLock (5977) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 15, 2004
A 3.2 average is far too low here. I tried 3 tap Legend styles in Williamsburg, and I was so impressed that I bought 6 bombers of all their different styles from the Wine Cellar in Williamsburg. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that Legend is one of my top 25 brewers in the USA. This one pours gold with a nice white head and excellent carbonation. The color is nothing to write home about, but the aroma and taste will knock your socks off. Aroma of big hops, big fruitiness, florals, and berries. Tastes very hoppy, with fruit, citrus, some honey, pine, and chardonnay at the finish. Very complex, with extremely well hidden alcohol. This is a world class beer, and I’m kicking myself for only buying one bomber.

This is the first IPA i ever had and still one of my favorite. Not as hoppy as some IPAs. The flavors mix well.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 redlem (1213) - Ohio, USA - NOV 8, 2003
Bright clear gold color with a medium white head. these east coast IPA tend to be very English and if Roger Prost is to be believed this is the right color for an IPA. The Mt. Hood hop has a definite English aroma and taste, a country, musty, grass aroma. A musty dry taste and finish. The 7% is not noticable at all.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 BBB63 (5039) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - NOV 1, 2003
On tap at Brewery: Golden hue as expected with an average white frothy head and solid lace. Aroma hinted of toasted malt, grain, very floral hops (more traditional than west-coast style), spices, and touch of fruit. The taste was mildly bitter with a good malt undertone, good balance. The finish had a noticeable acidic nature which did fit the inital taste profile. A bit smoky and spicy as well. Thin to medium-bodied with a lively mouthfeel and a metallic finish. An IPA this is not, more a standard pale ale, but still refreshing enough minus that acidic finish.
3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 sloth (2105) - Ceciltucky, Co., Maryland, USA - AUG 31, 2003
Good sized clean white head that lingers. Clear gold color, pretty. Lightly spicey hop nose with some graininess also. Medium body. Perfumey hop flavor with some malt backing. Some malt notes in the finish. Finish is dry with a mild hop bite and or maybe some astringency? Somewhat thin for an IPA.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Braudog (4607) - Hampton, Virginia, USA - AUG 8, 2003
UPDATED: MAR 27, 2007 Rerated on draft at the brewery, 3/25/07 ... much better than my original rating. It’s very light, looks like a macro with a poofy white head. This is 7%? Wow. I’d never guess. Smooth. Lightly tart and acidicly citric. Nice big gooey consistency. Sessionable. Good.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 TheBeerGod (4140) - Newport News, Virginia, USA - JUL 5, 2003
Pours a rich, deep bronze with a nice hoppy nose. The taste is similar to a weaker 90 Minute IPA or Ruination IPA but is definitely welcome and refreshing. Slightly bitter aftertaste and a piney, oily body and finish make this one worth drinking. Legend is beginning to make a decent impression.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 Kinz (2693) - Glen Allen, Virginia, USA - JUN 10, 2003
I'm biased, as this is a hometown favorite. The beer is pretty, with a lasting white head, tiny bubbles, and a golden body. Almost more appropriate for a Belgian Ale than an IPA though. The nose is all about bread, with a subtle spicy hop undertone. The palate is perfect, no bite, no cloying sweetness, the best this brewery has to offer. The tast again is surprising, very bready with a spicy hop finish from the Mt. Hood hops. When I have this, I don't think of it as an IPA (which, I'm sorry to say, it simply isn't), I view it simply as a tasty beer.
