3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 aracauna (2649) - Georgia, USA - JUL 20, 2006
Dark gold with a good white, soupy head. Perfectly clear. Aroma is big hoppy. Smells slightly old, but not really skunked. Long, lingering bitterness. An IPA of pils.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 muzzlehatch (4425) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - APR 28, 2006
Largish draught sample at the brewpub. Honey-gold in color with a touch of head lasting, little lace....light Saaz aroma, bready and like the lager touched by butterscotch, more pronounced in this case and a bit much, but the pale malt and hints of baked apples help to compensate....on the tongue, honey-sweet with faint lime citric tartness at first, the sugar dying quickly into a very dry, grassy, herbal finish that gets quite bitter indeed, clean and lean and hard right to the end but with plenty of malt substance to back it up. I liked the lager just a bit more, but these guys clearly know how to do German styles right.
2.1 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 Veeve (312) - Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA - MAR 25, 2006
pours out of the bottle. clear rusty-orange. small white head. smells like the seashore and yellow-gold apples. tastes really salty and yeasty - pretty much like ocean water then with hints of warm, unsweetened, sparkling apple cidar. seems strongly bitter until your palate acclimates to it then you can pick up the subtle roasted malts towards the end. watery, smooth texture. not particularly enjoyable but not awful.
2.7 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 michael-pollack (4536) - King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 12, 2006
Draught at the brewery: Did not experience any of the claimed hop aroma. In fact, there was no aroma at all. None. Golden in color, clear, and sparkling. Small white head that diminished quickly. No lacing. Slight hop presence in the flavor. Malt backbone. Bland overall. Well balanced. Medium bodied. Average carbonation. Slightly below-average Pils. Just no real standout flavor. Best of the three lighter beers I tried this day.
