COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This ale takes its name from the sturdy old Thornycroft engine in the Sawmill grounds. Strong in flavour and colour, this tyipcal dark ale is styled on the English porter. It has deep copper hues, generous toasted malt flavours and a mild bitterness with a lasting hoppy taste and aroma. This is to be savoured slowly. It makes an ideal accompanimnet to roast or babequed red meats. 4.3 to 4.5% abv

Poured from the can, a dark and very clear brown with a large, but quickly disipating, pillowy off white head. Quite a metallic aroma, accompanied by only a little sweet caramal and nutty malt. A surprisingly hoppy palate, a little thin and again metallic. The malty flavour is a little grainy and has a sickly sweetness. Agree with Papsoe, this is more an ESB. A little disappointing for me - but then, a Porter in a can?!?

(Can 44 cl) Clear, orangey brown with a dense, creamy, off-white head leaving some lacework. Aroma of vanilla and roasted malt. Medium body, a little low in carbonation with sweetish, roasted malt accents, some nuts and vanilla. Almost no bitterness. Almost too pale to be a Porter - almost closer to an ESB! But highly drinkable. 130208
