Traditional stone beer brewed with super-heated stones.

GoufCustom (823) - HONG KONG - SEP 4, 2014

500 ml flip-top bottle bought at Biorganic’s booth at HKCEC in Wan Chai during HKTDC Food Expo 2014.

Looks: Cloudy hazy amber honey colour with a hard layer of dirt-like yeast sediments; Half-finger head and off-white foam which lasts for 1 minute; Small sticky lacing and notable, very slow-rising carbonation.

Aroma: Quite fragrant malt, with caramel, plums, toffee, honey, strong molasses, light floral, light bread, strong yeast, faint lemon and light grass.

Taste: Medium sweet malt, with strong caramel, thick molasses, light butterscotch, toffee, stoney hot spring, light plums and raisins, strong yeast, light lemon, light bitter hops and grass.

Body: Light body, watery but slightly slick palate.

Mouth Feel: Moderately malty in a thin body, with a little turbid and muddy palate from the hot stones and yeast but beyond that, it has amazingly strong amber-ish caramel, nice butterscotch and toffee, minerals from stone-boiled hotspring (I kid you not!), notable dark fruits, molasses sweetness is right on. Tasty yeast (way better than that of the rotten Kellerbier!). Smart and nice!

Hoppiness: Light floral, faint lemon and light grass in nose and taste. Bitterness is moderate to low, match the molasses nicely for a lasting, fairly low-fi sweet-bitter finish.

After Taste: Slightly dry. Sweet and yeasty to mouth.

Comments: After several mediocre Leikeim lagers, this Steinbier really lives up to its name - great top-fermented, dark-fruity ale with a very old-school feel to it. Good caramel malt and sweetness with a nice reminder of hot stone influence. Almost every reviewers complained of its watery body and thin maltyness, but I guess this is a trait for most of Leikeim beer’s line-up. Looks raw from the outside, but its taste is satisfying with every sips. A winner!

Cloudy amber color, average sized creamy off white head. Aroma of hops, caramel, nuts. Roasted, kinda burnt feeling. Balanced sweetness and bitterness. Medium body, average carbonation. Very enjoyable. Slightly watery texture, other than that, it’s great.

50 cl swing top bottle at a restaurant in Recoaro Terme, 5.8%. Pours dark off-yellow almost orange, fizzy, white head. Earthy and malty nose. Aroma is malty, grainy, woody, earhty with lots of yeast and a spicy leftover. Taste is mild, sweetish, soft bitterness in the finish. Nice and raw.

Bottle. This is a great, wonderful beer. In a land of a million pale ales, it’s really nice to have something different. Cloudy amber color with a great foamy head. Aroma is very well balanced. Grains with hints of fruit and nuts. Taste is very complex. Nutty, grains, perfectly sweet in a very subtle way. Really good.

Bottle from RSB, pours amber with an off-white head and aromas of caramel toffee, spice and a little apple. Mid-full bodied with toasty notes, a bit more toffee, a hint of star anis, a light breadiness and a peppery bitterness.

The beer pours a light brown with less carbonation bubbles than the norm. The head is tan and fluffy that leaves pronounced lacing around the glass. There are yeast smells mixed with bread and other malts. There is a pleasant combination of yeasts and bread tastes, although the flavor is not as pronounce in flavor as others in this style.
