COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

An aroma that is a malt with hints of chocolate. The brew is dark brown as light does come through it. It is very smooth with slight bitterness. The overall flavor of malt and chocolate is not well defined.

dark, cola-like colour, grat creamy beige head; aroma of roasted malts, some minimal coffee and grassy hops; taste of roasted malts again with coffee-notes and grassy hops and hay; correct swarzbier

Fliptop bottled, 0.5 l. Label says that a Pils brew mixed with a dark one, so it truly looks like a Schwarzbier, but smells and tastes rather like a Pils with an aroma ruled by bread, grass and dough underpainted by mild caramel and coffee notes. Finish is grassy-roasty, dry. Overall an easy drinkable and pleasantly refreshing dark brew with a light 2 medium body.

500 ml flip-top bottle as “Leikeim Schwarzes” bought at Lafaco & Co’s booth at HKCEC in Wan Chai during Hong Kong Food Festival 2013.

Clear Cola blackish brown colour; One finger head and crumpety light beige foam which last for 2 minutes; Moderate sticky lacing and active carbonation; Sweet aroma of roasted malt, with caramel, light cream, faint black coffee, molasses and strong straw; Mid to light sweet taste of strong roasted dark malt, with metallic, light black coffee, cola, nuts, strong liquorices, lemon and very strong strawy hops; Light body, watery and slightly slick palate; Mouth feel is thin black coffee and watered down cola base filled with really bitter hops and lemon. Also quite metallic but bearable. Fairly low sweet, very roasty and nutty. Wow… Hoppiness is strong straw nose, very potent lemon and strawy grassy taste. Liquorices is close to German Pils level, really bitter and astringency for a lasting, memorable finish; Slightly dry after taste, Roasty and really bitter to mouth.

Comments: I had no expectation for this one, so I was pretty shaked up by its full-on roastiness and German Pils-like bitterness. However these goodies were offset by metallic and lack of variety in taste. Overall it’s simple, bold and hoppy. A real beer for tough guys!

Bottle. Contrary to what I expected from reading the label, the hoppiness in this one is subdued. Alas, its bready, caramelly, roasted, earthy and licorice notes do not fail to deliver. The soft taste adds some notes of nuts and chocolate to this and all ends light bitter. Very good schwarzbier.

500 ml. swing top bottle. BBD 3/27/14. Pours a medium, ivory head, with some lacing, over a clear, brown (SRM 25) body......nose is light cocoa, cereal, hints of spice....taste is cereal, light cocoa, leading to a dry, mildly hop bitter finish, with hints of roasted bitterness.....mouth feel light, minimal astringency, carbonation makes a clean acid finish. This falls into the style, but is an exceedingly simple and uninteresting beer. Both aroma and taste could be increased greatly with small increases in the dark roasted malts. As it is, it is almost a dark Pale Lager. BJCP 6/3/12/5/6
