A balanced bock. That said it lacks the heavy malty sweetness characteristic of the style. While the caramel malt comes through with a sweet malt flavor there is a hopped finish that it uncharacteristic of bocks. I liked the beer but expected less hopps and more malt. Wonderful head forms in the glass.

12 oz. bottle from mix 12 pack. Clear brown in color no much retention. Light caramel malt in nose not much else. Flavor is mildly sweet. Real mild. Caramel, biscuit and just a hint of hops. Texture is lightly creamy. Well over all; not real bad. One of the better brews in the 12 pack, whatever that is saying. Bit bland and forgettable.

Originally reviewed: 1/27/09. Poured into a pilsner glass with a bright tawny/ruby color with a huge white frothy head. Smells malty and bready. Seriously, smells like I just stepped into a bakery.
Right away the beer feels very slick and wet. Of course this doesn’t hinder the drinkability, but I don’t care for how thin it feels. The flavor on this one is pretty bland at best. I can taste the sweet malt, but nothing is crisp or dominant. The best part of this beer though, is the aftertaste. For what it lacks in up-front flavor, it makes up for in aftertaste. My mouth is full of bready flavors, like I just ate some of my mom’s fresh-baked pumperknickel. For this I could drink one of these after the other.
A little disappointing, but hints of this beer were promising. Leinie’s needs to tweak this one just a bit more. I’ll definitely drink this again.

I’m a sucker for midwest bocks give me a Huber anytime the old Point bock. The old Leinies bock from years back. See a lot of bad ratings on this Leinies gets a good bashing and they do make some bad brews ( Fireside) this one I enjoyed last year. Nice body and flavor just get it cold or its a waste. Nice mouthfeel and a lot going for it. This year in a money grab they released Shandy instead and put this in sampler packs which I will not see down here bummer. It was hard enough to find this in Florida last year.Leinies bad move on your part got to have a bock in the spring. Guess the rest of the country and your marketing department does not feel the same way. Beat the hell out of Shiner thats for sure. Leinies beers must not be selling well down here they tried expansion here in the 90s and pulled it I am afraid it will happen again.

Very week beer. Watery and bland. I was extremely let down by this bock. I’ve had better Bug Light...

Got a pint of this for 1.50 and passed on to another anyways because it blew. Water + butter+ boddingtons = 1888 bock.

Pours a clear mahogany brown. Aroma of dark maple, but only faint. Taste is maple syrup at the start with a slightly smokey finish.

Snifter from bottle. A: almost no nose. I can’t detect anything. App: beautiful very dark amber. Small dark tan head that disperses rather quickly. T: taste of copper on the front. And a slightly bitter, bland carmel flavor. Mostly lingering copper aftertaste. P: nice bubbles from front through the back. Even goes down bubbly. Shiner is twice a good and much more easily found!

This has a nice dark color with a fragrant coffee aroma. The coffee comes through in the taste, as well. It’s almost porter-like in that respect. A somewhat shocking and pleasant find from Leinie’s.
