COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big Eddy Baltic Porter is a blanket of malt flavor. Notes of toffee, cocoa, caramel, toasted bread and sherry fruit flavors are interwoven to produce a symphony of splendor. Our Baltic Porter is an homage to the brewers of the Baltics and a tribute to our own historic brewing waters, the Big Eddy Spring.

Looks and smells promising but an odd flavor note keeps this from being a repeater. Never could place what it was but probably the same thing the previous reviewer called metallic.

Roast, coffee, fruit. A bit on the sweet side, but decent. Very dark brown. Medium-full bodied and a touch oily. Decent, but I’m not all that impressed.

Black pour with a small, orange-tan head. Aroma is full of dark fruit, reduced fruit juices, dark sugar and pine tar, plenty of dark chocolate and dark caramel in there as well. Flavor is big on roast, molasses, dark fruit, port wine simmered tree fruit, chocolate and toffee nuts, there’s some caramel, earthy grain, licorice, cherry, fig jam and raisin in there as well. Finishes a little tart and lightly metallic, but with lots of dark fruit carrying on. Heavy to medium body, chewy to goopy feel on entry, dry, slightly acidic and metallic-dry, but goopy finish, medium, sharp carbonation. Good stuff overall, but the metallic notes and weird mouthfeel definitely hold it back. I really want to give it a higher score, but the mouthfeel kinda sucks.

December 26, 2012 - bottle from Coffee Grounds. Dark brown pour with nice amount of head. Caramel, roasted malt, toffee and dark fruit in the aroma. Taste seemed to be mostly the caramel and dark fruit with a mild alcohol and nutty finish.

12 0z. bottle. Pours dark brown black with a tight thin creamy looking khaki head that settles to a wispy film and collar. Aroma has some dark pitted fruit and wet cork scents with some fig, raisin and mocha. Taste is more raisin licorice and figs with a strong bitterness and faint bakers chocolate and a little yuk. Palate is medium sticky and meh.

Toffee, chocolate, and fruit. Leinenkugel’s, after nearly 150 years, is finally starting to get creative with their brews. It’s good, but the fruity aftertaste is slightly unappealing.

Sweet malt scents and taste with a bit of malt. Taste is way too sweet, it masks the other flavors. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Transfer from BA review on 5-24-13- Poured from bottle into a snifter Appearance – The beer pours a deep-deep chestnut color bordering on black. Upon pouring there is a thin tan colored foam sitting atop the brew which fades rather rapidly to leave almost no lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is a nice mix of a dark roasted malt aroma and some rather strong boozy aromas of port. Along with these smells are aromas of chocolate, caramel, as well as some dark fruits bringing sweeter notes to the nose and combining with the others to give a nice warming aroma to the brew. Taste – The taste starts out with some roasted malt flavors as well as quite a bit of a sweeter dark fruit flavor of cherry and raisin. As the flavors advance more sweetness of some plum as well as a red wine like boozy grape flavor come to the tongue. A bit of a cocoa flavor comes more toward the end of the taste, along with an increase in the alcohol flavors due to an oncoming port taste entering the taste. In the end, the combination of sweeter dark fruits and boozy flavors leaves a rather port wine mixed with roasted malt flavor to be left to linger on the tongue; warming the mouth nicely. Mouthfeel – The body of the brew a bit light for Baltic category brew. The carbonation level, on the other hand, is slightly above average. For the style, the opposite characteristics; a lower carbonation and thicker creaminess, may have better suited the style giving all the boozy fruit flavors a chance to soak into the tongue. Overall –Not a bad Baltic overall. There are lots of port and dark fruit flavors swirling within this one, creating a rather fruity and sweet brew.

Bottle. Dark brown pour, small ring of carbonation and an aroma of a light cocoa. Flavor is a little caramel, more chocolate, some dark cherry and slightly vegetal and thin on the finish. Was hoping for a richer/thicker body, but still not too bad.
