Gillard (35), Florida, USA Jan 4, 2008 Being a Wisconsin grad and drinking plenty of leine’s in college I was excited to try this one.
Pours an ink black goo with very little head. The smell was of cherries, toast ,and bittersweet chocolate. Palate was ok and sustaining. A very solid effort by Leinenkugels.
douglas88 (652), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Jul 26, 2008 Bottle shared by Eric. Pours a pure black body with a small beige head. The aroma was straight out of a bakers oven; tons of sweet plums, dark chcolate cake, and some super sweet candies. The taste was also very sweet; chcolates, brown sugar, some smoked candies, a touch of toasted malts, and overall a really dessert like brew. A great mouthfeel, rich and full. Very enjoyable. hellbilly (796), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Jul 22, 2008 bottles aplenty from at least half of the folks who have traded with me over the last year... thanks! pours as black as brown can be with a medium brick reddish brown cap. it stains pretty wickedly and leaves behind some decent drippy lacing. smells like malted chocolate ovaltine...really! also, black raisins, molasses, sweet grain and cream... smells like an amped up baltic porter. the flavor is a very robust though sweetened version of the aroma... arggh.... chocolate brownies and burnt black raisin bread with a light sourness and some astringency on the finish. medium body. it seems rather rich and creamy but i’m sure it’s just the sugar messing up my palate... bastards!... thickfreakness (12), Austin, Texas, USA Jul 21, 2008 Many thanks to hoppymeal for throwing in this as a wants list extra. It pours dark black with a thin layer of brown head. Nose is slight soy, tons of dark fruit, bitter chocolate, toffee, and alcohol. Great smelling beer and I could get a whiff from a few feet away. Taste is really similar with a ton of dark fruits, and a bitter roasty finish. Huge viscous mouthfeel. A great RIS, one of my favorites from all of the ones I have tried in the past few months. phishpond417 (1162), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Jul 20, 2008 This beer pours a dark black colour with a huge brown head. Aroma is very strong of alcohol and spice, flavor is reminiscent of port- possibly brandy spirit. Strong and infused, this beer will get you crunked after just one. Retorp (2148), Tampa, Florida, USA Jul 18, 2008 Courtesy of Hopscotch. The aroma is incredibly fruity. Highlighted by cherry, but with other dark fruits as well there is also chocolate, perfumey alcohol and hints of molasses. The strength of the fruit tones are noteable and in my experience unparalleled in an Imperial Stout. I just wish I got a little more to go along with it. The body is a flat dark black and after a gloppy syrupy pour the beer settles mostly headless though you can tease up a quickly fading mocha head. On the first sip the first flavor revealed is rich chocolate and more of that massively concentrated cherry accented dark fruit from the aroma. Baker’s chocolate and chocolate liqueur follow along with espresso in the far aftertaste. That firs sip is delightful in its flavor and concentration, but on the whole this lacks the range of flavor many other Imperials offer. Still a great brew.
