The Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout was brewed at Leinenkugel’s tiny 10th street brewery in Milwaukee. This brew boasts a selection of 11 malts and grains balanced by three different and distinct hops. Dark and complex, with chocolate tones and notes of dark fruits, it is daring yet delicious. Travels well. Ages well.

On tap at Stub & Herb’s. Served in a tulip glass. Dark brown (almost black), mostly opaque body with brown head. Aroma of roasted coffee bean, sweet malts, chocolate, and molasses. Smooth, medium to heavy body with flavors of cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, and a hint of bourbon. Decent complexity, with more bourbon-like flavors coming out as the beer warms, along with some dark fruit and vanilla. Finish and aftertaste are predominantly baker’s/dark chocolate along with some coffee tones.

UPDATED: JAN 7, 2011 (Bottle thanks to hopscotch, OSLO, and Guerde) Pours extremely black with a small brown head. The aroma is heavily roasted but smooth and oily with a balanced sweetness and some burned hints. Tones of dark chocolate ice cream, molasses, dark caramel, vinous/dark fruity, notes of mild coffee beans, dark bread, some tar, liquorice, a whisper of smoke, rum raisins, almonds, vanilla and some hints of floral and citric hops in the background. A tiny touch of canned pears, blueberries and currant. The flavour is medium to heavily roasted with tones of chocolate ice cream, molasses, caramel, vanilla, light smoke, hints of dark fruits, dark cherries, some coffee and currant. Hints of ginger, mint, blueberries and tar. The mouthfeel is thick, oily, sticky but yet very smooth. Sweet with a light bitterness to back it up. Molasses, dark chocolate, dark bread and brown sugar lingers. Full bodied. A fantastic IMP. Second rating: (Bottle, 3 years old) Pours black. The aroma is oxidized with notes of wet cardboard, black olives, sweat, cocoa, asphalt and coffee. Some old hops in the background. Syrup and molasses. Overripe bark berries. The flavour is medium sweet and light to medium bitter with almost no acidic notes. Molasses, dark syrup, cold tart coffee and soy/salt liquorice. The mouthfeel is bit tart, light oily and a bit flat. Medium bodied. This is better fresh. 7/4/7/3/14

Pours very dark brown in color with a nice cascading head from the bottom of the glass. Head quickly diminishes and leaves nice webbing on the inside of the glass.
Smell is dark cocoa and some very dark, ripe fruits. Taste is wonderful. All the roastiness I come to love in my imperial stouts. Not a noticable hop presence, which is a plus as well. Very good roasted coffee in the taste as well.
My only knock is that it is a tad thin on the mouthfeel. If this were to bulk up a bit it would be world class.

Bottle courtesy of Grub: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a medium dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with loads of sweet notes. Taste is also dominated by some sweet cloying notes with some light notes of black chocolate and coffee. Full body with oily texture and good retention and no apparent alcohol. I think I am going against the grain on this one but I just can’t like these super sweet imperial stout; I prefer them when they are more balance with coffee and black chocolate.

Thanks to Drew for this one. Dark black pour stands up a small creamy brown head that quickly fades. The aroma is coffee and chocolate and licorice. The flavor is sweet, contains a slight lactic sourness, shows coffee and chocolate roastedness.

12 oz bottle via Mys Swap 3.0. Pours black with a nice compact tan head. Aroma is chocolate and roasted coffee. Taste is sweet burnt caramel and fruity coffee, plum, fig, with lots of fruity esters and a bit of soy and licorice in the aftertaste. Body is medium/full, carbonation is medium/moderate. A damned fine Imp stout!

Poured a black with brownish head. Aroma was lots of smoke and ash. Flavor was much the same lots of ash in there which i didn’t enjoy. The beer did nothing to seperate itself from others.

Dark brown/black body with faint brown head. A little soy amid the dry chocolate malt aroma. Faint vanilla in the smooth chocolate and oatmeal body. Thanks to Skyview for sharing!

Bottled, big thanks to pantanap for sending this through trade. Extremely dark pour, with an oily appearance; minimal brown head ending up with some swirls. Instantaneous aroma that exhibits a plethora of vanilla bean, molasses, dark chocolate and espresso, very nice! The flavor follows up faithfully with a strong roasted malt front with inner complexities of black cherry, raisin and currant. Full-bodied and smooth on the tongue. A bit of a tang in the finish that almost became a bit like soy-sauce, but maintainable. Lasting bitterness that lends a very pleasing tone of more chocolate and dark fruit. Tasty tasty.

bottle from the cheese man! thick black pour. Nice brown head, good retention. Nose is very matly, with some chocolate, and quite a bit of alcohol. Flavour is very roasty, some nice coffee, and chocolate notes. Medium body, a tad chewy, a decent bitter finish. A good impy, but not excellent.
