3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: MAY 25, 2015 Bottle. Aroma is booze, roasty, chocolate, smoke, and more booze. Pours black with minimal tan head. Taste is smoky (beef jerky) , alcohol, with a harsh bitterness throughout. Sticky mouthfeel, full-bodied, lively carbonation. Overall: The alcohol is really prominent in the flavor of this all the way through. 7/4/6/3/13 (1/26/13)
Blind RIS experiment [Sample 3/20, 3/26/2015]:
Thanks to Summer again for pouring this. Thick, opaque, nearly black pour with small, fine bubbled, creamy brown head. Aroma: sweetened cocoa; cherry juice in a metal can; green apples and/or underripe berries. Yeah, Iíd say underripe berries. Taste bring a big punch of ashy roast bitterness -- thereís a good chance this is one of the two Evil Twin beers in the line-up. Copper and dough in there as well. Palate: full body, soft-medium carbonation, slick oily texture. It has an alcohol heft to it -- I bet this is the booziest of the ones so far, probably clocking in northward of 11%. Overall: thereís a big punch packed into this one, but itís dissonant. In fact, Iíd say most of the elements packed into this donít play well together, and most of what I can articulate strike me as flaws. Call me crazy, but Iím just not into astringent, fruity, ashy, metallic boozy stouts. Underripe berries deScriptor is hard to shake, and as the glass goes on my enjoyment plummets.
How much would I pay for this? If I just wanted to boost, I could throw a couple of bucks at this. Maybe. <shrug>.
Addendum: given the deScriptions, Iím surprised I gave it those numbers. Should probably be lower, but Iíll leave it as is.

Good, enjoyable RIS. Nothing too unique or standout, but a traditional RIS executed very well.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Very pleasantly surprised. Iíd generally consigned Leinenkugels to the large brewer trash bin but this rather small batch Imperial impressed me with its complex flavors and nice aroma. Just a wee bit too thin but an impressive effort from a larger brewer. Only trouble is finding it as it came and went in my area fairly quickly.

Sampled at Northgate Andover beer tasting. Hollow and bitter for a Russian Imperial, but still pretty decent.

Delicious beer. Funny how you can write a brewer off as average, but then they release a one off and you see they really do have talent. The Big Eddy beers have been really good in my opinion. Aroma was big, thick and full. Bitter baking chocolate with a dose of roasted malt. Very nice. Pour was a deep dark brown with a thin off white film for a head. Taste was good. Not as full as the aroma, but still nice. Very bitter. Dark chocolate with just a hint toffee and not much else. Very one dimensional, but a good dimension it is. Mild carbonation.
