COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout was brewed at Leinenkugel’s tiny 10th street brewery in Milwaukee. This brew boasts a selection of 11 malts and grains balanced by three different and distinct hops. Dark and complex, with chocolate tones and notes of dark fruits, it is daring yet delicious. Travels well. Ages well.

On tap. This is such a complex, and HUGE beer. It took 1.5 hours of slow sipping to drink the pint. The flavors and smells evolved considerably as the beer opened up and warmed. It should have been served in a brandy snifter instead of the pint glass. If I could change one thing, I’d make the alcohol a bit less forward. There is a very forward distilled alcohol flavor that does fade a bit as the beer warms. What a fun beer. Definitely worth a try, you’ll never forget it if you do.

Transfer from BA review on 1-6-13- Poured from bottle into a snifter Appearance – Pours a black colored brew with a one finger light brown head. The head fades relatively quickly to leave a nice level of lacing. Upon swirling the glass the thickness of the brew can be seen with it clinging to the sides of the glass and slowly receding down to the base of the brew. Smell- The aroma is heavy of chocolate and roasted malt with a presence of a bourbon like smell. A light coffee and molasses as well as a light licorice and dark fruit smell join the others and make for a rather nice roasty and dark aroma. Taste – The taste begins very smooth with a roasted malt and coffee heavy flavor. Sweeter flavors of dark fruits and molasses soon come to the tongue with the smoothness losing ground to a more turbid and carbonated taste. Flavors of chocolate then start entering onto the tongue. A very light alcohol flavor with hints of bourbon hit the taste buds more toward the end. The chocolate and coffee flavors grow stronger and get more intense at the end and when combined with the more subtle sweet flavors produce a very smooth and roasted dark flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – This is one fantastic feel. As discussed above, it begins on the very creamy and smooth side with a very light carbonation felt on the tongue. As the brew sits in the mouth, tiny carbonation bubbles seem to make their presence known, slightly taking down the creaminess, but providing a great level of effervesce to compliment the sweet and bring in greater complexity to the feel. The end leaves a rather thick and lightly carbonated feel to linger on the tongue. This is actually one of the greatest feeling stouts I have ever had - It’s complex yet complimenting and balanced. Overall – Now I know that most of you automatically label this beer as sub-par as it comes from a more macro brewery, but I say this, give it an “honest and unbiased” chance. It doesn’t have the best flavor profile, although it is good with a nice roasty and dark flavor with a good level of sweetness. The real great thing of this beer is its feel and smell. Its feel is absolutely phenomenal with the smell being quite nice. Look past your preconceived notions and give this beer a honest go.

Had this on tap at the brewery. I drank 4 other samples and had 2 of these. They only allow you to have 1 of the RIS but my wife don’t care for RIS’ s so I got lucky. This beer was damn good. Had that dark chocolate and black licorice taste. Has great smokey finish and silky smooth on the palate. Fantastic beer and would like a full pint.

On tap at the Twisted Kilt in Myrtle Beach, SC, this pours pitch black with a nice choco-tan head that retains decently, leaving soapy lacing down the glass. The nose is of roasted grain and chocolate. Flavors have lots of toasted grains, chocolate malt, some toffee/caramel, and a nice buttering hop to balance the finish. Silky smooth with soft carbonation, it provides a full-bodied, velvety quaff. Best of this brewery I've had by a country mile. Nice job.

I only had a sample at a beer festival a week ago. It was a great surprise because I didn’t know Leinenkugel made stouts. I will have to add to my review when I have a chance to drink one from top to bottom.

A pretty fun, big black’un. Such a dark brown, almost purple, with a huge tawny bonnet. Beautiful, really. Smell is a bit boozy, but in the whiskey, warming way, not astringent. Also lots of dark fruitcake, raisins, smoke, cocoa, a bit of coffee and leather. Tasted the same to me and had a nice boozy, vanilla latte and fruitcake finish. Somewhat syrupy texture but really quite a nice RIS.
