A rare blend of rye malts gives a spicy complexity to a brew with the unforgettable depth of an American barleywine ale.

Bootle, courtesy of myself, poured @ dining room table, just now.
Pours a deep reddish brown with a very small and very well retained head that leaves some lacing on the glass.

The aroma is fairly sweet and a little boozy, Its got rich toffee & some cooked fruit going on.

The flavor is actually really cohesive, its sweet & has nice notes of cherry mild hop and alcohol spiciness, with a warming boozy presence that doesnt come across as harsh at all. The bitterness is low but lingers in the background & there is a nice bit of rich toffee and caramel.

Well put together, good beer.

The nose is mellow, but colorful, with dark fruits, prunes, figs, strawberries, toffee, and dark malts. Not as spicy as the rye would have you think. The mouthfeel is medium, with moderate carbonation and medium viscosity. The taste is bitter and slightly sweet; fruity, malty flavors at the top, with an increasingly assertive presence of ethanol that leads to a relatively sudden, dull, grainy, boozy finish. The first impression is a great one, but it starts to fall apart mid-glass as the alcohol comes to define the gustatory experience. I really enjoyed the aroma, though.

Shared 12 oz. bottle poured to snifters, showing a brownish copper color, with a modest layer of off white head foam, and spots & streaks of lacing. The nose was candy sweetness, slight tartness, esters as dried fruit, some pit variety, and dark cherry, with some spice & vanilla. Medium bodied, with a bit of syrup to the texture, carbonation was soft, and most of the alcohol fanfare was hidden by the candy. A fairly tasty Barleywine, though.

Pours dark, nearly opaque, chestnut brown. Brief light tan head. Faint aroma of dried fruits. Flavor starts dry rye, morphs quickly to a sweeter, fruitier place, with a deep, rich fruitcake background, dried plums. Its more deep and rich than sweet. It develops over time. Intriguing.

UPDATED: JUL 13, 2014 12oz. bottle, 2013 vintage. Aroma of sweet, caramel malt, some spicy rye and dried fruit here as well as notes of cherry, faint madeira and vanilla. Mostly clear dark rusty brown in color with a very fine, slight head. Flavor profile is richly sweet and sugary with suggestions of brown sugar, dates, faint berry and jam, and finishing with a touch of alcoholic warmth. Relatively low in effervescence with a full, slightly syrupy feel and plenty of body, as anticipated. Earlier bottles had a tad more hop bitterness which I think has aged out to an extent, and I did prefer it fresher, for the record (this has been factored into the rating accordingly).

Draft. Poured a dark brown color with a moderate frothy tan head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate complex roasted sweet malt aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture and flat carbonation. Medium dark sweet flavor with a medium sweet and small alcohol finish of moderate duration. This is a soft beer for style.

Draft to taster. Looks decent; softly carbonated though. A transparent caramel with razor-thin off-white lacing. Smells malty with notes of toffee and caramel. Tastes like it smells with a bit of dark fruit and spice with an average medium-bodied mouthfeel. Not bad, but maltier and more syrupy than Id prefer.

Taster on tap at Ei8ht Ball. Mostly clear dark red color. Thin ring of off-white head. Dark fruity malts in the nose. Some spicy rye grains. Moderate sweet taste. Light bit of sweet warmth. Big body, slick finish. Lighter carbonation. OK, but it doesnt do much for me. Just kind of sweet, very slick. Hides the alcohol well-enough.
