A rare blend of rye malts gives a spicy complexity to a brew with the unforgettable depth of an American barleywine ale.

Draft sample at Ei8ht Ball. Pours a mostly clear reddish brown amber with a small off white head. Notes of toasted, caramel, and surprisingly big rye malts (late, especially), dark fruits (dates, figs, raisins), brown sugar, cookie, and a little chocolate. Medium-bodied, with a dry, toasty mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. I should clarify that the amount of rye was only surprising not because I’m an idiot and couldn’t read the name, but because they didn’t hold it back at all; it’s very pronounced in the finish and gives it a dry, moderately spicy aftertaste. Interesting beer.

2013 bottle, rich malty and spicy aroma straight from the bottle. Leathery notes of barleywine with a heavy sticky weight. A touch of alcohol heat, and a rich finish. Not a bad effort, the Big Eddy series seems pretty solid.

Aroma is rye, caramel malts and a hint of bubblegum/astringency. The flavor is caramel malts, an undercurrent of the rye, mild fruit and a mix of warming alcohol and tartness in the finish. Decent barley wine.

Pours a copper color with a white head. Has a nice aroma of dark fruits. Flavor is honey sweet dark fruit, along with a touch of spices. After taste leaves a little to be desired. Has a medium body mouthfeel, much less thick than most barley wines. Still, this is an enjoyable ale, and I’m glad I picked it up.

Pours rich but clear amber and maintains a nice head. Aroma of bitter hops and leather. Tastes like a bitter, malty medicinal leather with all of those flavors coming through a medium body.

Pours a reddish color and has no lacing. Tastes sweet and of rye. I am not usually a barley wine person, but this is quite good. I will get this again.

bottle. Deep amber with minimal head. A bit syrupy with light carbonation. Strong rye with the booziness you’d expect from the style.

Sampled on draft at Rivertowne this beer poured a bright golden color with a small foamy white head that faded and left a bit of lacing. the aroma was cider vinegar, bread, citrus and a bit of Sprite. The flavor was tangy and bready with some vinegar, butter, perfume and pepper. Medium length bread, vinegar and perfume finish. Medium body. Not good.

Bottle:   Bit of a slightly rough and thin Barley Wine.   Not rich or overly malty, nor overly hoppy.   Has a bready aspect, rye, some pithy bitterness.   Does hide the 10% ABV well.   A little rough, witih a very faint cough syrup like sweetness.   Could be a little smoother, but its not green or young.   Moderate example that could use a little work.   Thanks Bob!

Bottle, shared with Parksy and Grippitis. Dark mahogany pour with a coppery luster. Aroma is sweet and malty, with vinous traits. Very sweet, sticky palate, lots of caramel and dark fruits, spicy and vinous nuances, but really just very sweet. Glad I had Parksy and Grippits for this one, as there’s no way I could finish this bottle by myself.
