3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: SEP 16, 2012 Tap pours copper brown red with lasting off white head. The aroma is mild with mostly toasted malt flavors. The taste is smooth but big and grainy. There is a nice mellow chocolate up front with a raisin date murky fruit behind it and a lingering toasted and roasted grain. There is enough bitterness to contend with the grain but what little hay and grass like hop flavors you get are overcome by grain and alcohol. A solid effort but finishes a bit basic, good for leinenkugel though.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared by shigadeyo. Poured dark clear brown color with an average frothy light brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted malt and alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate duration. Good complex brew.

almost a red tint to the otherwise dark leather color with a beige head. a gentle toasted malt aroma. The high alcohol content is masked beautifully by the semi sweet caramel roasted malts.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
12oz bottle pours a translucent copper amber with one ring of off white head. Nose is overly estery for a scotch ale, figs, butterscotch, cola, candy sugar, banana, clove. Actually smells more like a Belgian quad than a scotch ale. Flavor is a cross between a scotch ale and a quad, first flavors are massive fruit flavors, dates, figs, Belgian candy sugar, but there is also a bit of smoke, caramelized meat, bananas, cloves, bubblegum. There is a bit more malt in the flavor, but the yeast esters really over power everything else. Full bodied, sweet finish. Not my type of scotch ale.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Clear brownish caramel color with a thin head. Aroma of sweet malt, alcohol, syrup, and smoke. Taste is smokey caramel and syrup with some chocolate flavor and a relatively strong, but complimentary, alcohol presence. Medium-full bodied, pretty smooth and a bit boozy. Nice, it’s not too sweet, which is a fault (to me) of many scotch ales. I’m really shocked that this is a leinenkugel. This is well above the other leinenkugels that I’ve tried. I know it’s a special release and all, but it’s WAY above the others.

Bottle to snifter. Looks alright, but a little thin. Smells decent; what you’d expect. Tastes meh. Good...for a Leine.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Flipdaddy’s, served in a snifter. Little khaki head. Clear darker red / brown color. Nice, rich caramel light smoky scotch aroma. Good, sweet and savory taste. Lighter, crisp carbonation. Decent smokey sweet aftertaste, but kind of syrupy. I’m not a big scotch ale guy so I wouldn’t choose this as a go-to, but I think this is a pretty respectable example of the style.
