3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 bhensonb (8997) - Woodland, California, USA - APR 4, 2013
Bottle from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours deep ruddy copper with a transient yellowish head. Aroma is lightly smoky roasted malt. Full bodied. Flavor is sweet malt with some mild spice. Maybe a touch of smoke. Or not. There’s a lot of malt - but I don’t find burnt or chocolate. More treacle. I think there’s some floral hop, but am not sure. It is very tasty in a heavy malty sort of way. I’m considering whether this is a smoke tinged barley wine thing. Whatever, it tastes good.

Light smokey aromas. Flavors are very smokey, peat, bacon, dark fruits. Light brown sugar, caramel and blue cheese. Fuller mouthfeel, fuller carbonation than expected.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 CaptainCougar (7093) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - JUL 19, 2012
12oz bottle: pours a clear deep copper mahogany with a thin-lacing froth of tan head. Has a sweet toasty caramel malty nose with a touch of light fruits and mild peat. Starts with decent fullness and light carbonation with some toasted caramel sweetness and light fruity tartness before a drier earthy finish. Would be better without the tartness, but is still a good attempt at the style.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 DocLock (6800) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 7, 2012
Pours clear mahogany with a finger of tan head. Nose is roasty slightly rauchy scotch malt, earthy, hoppy, with some dark fruit and plasticy notes. Tastes rich, with a huge scotch malt bill, oaky notes, dark fruit, and some spirity plasticy hints. Waters out late. Not bad, but not a world beater.
