3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle and served in my Iechyd Da snifter: Pours a ruby mahogany hue with fading fizzy head and no lace. The aroma has notes of caramel, toffee, moderate smoke, slight iodine, some aromatic chocolate malts along with a dollop of mineral water and leather. The taste is smoky sweet and meaty but compared to the Pipeworks Wee Heavy I had before it this seems tepid and weaker. Some boozy, medicinal and mineral elements as well to help complexity. The mouth feel is oily and medium bodied. Drinkable but lacks the richness to compete with the alcohol, colour me a wee bit disappointed.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft sample at Cincy Beerfest 2014 on Fountain Square. Pours a dark, somewhat cloudy amber, almost brownish, with a big beige head. Notes of toffee, brown sugar, cream, peat, earth, and dark fruits. The mouthfeel is way out of whack- both fairly high in malt/peat intensity and watered down at the same time. Very strange and uneven. Medium-high carbonation. Just clumsily made, from my read. Should be better. I’m surprised at the average score for this one.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
"Been lookin for this a long time. Beautiful pour - just like the pic without cool backlighting. a little on the sweet side with dark fruits, toffee...a little sugary sweet but fitting. The peatiness won me over instantly. More smoky in the flavor than the nose. Adds a really nice depth. at $2.50, a steal. A little too high on the residual sweetness with any age on it, still good though."

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
09/12/2014 - From bottle in tulip glass.
Deep brown with liquor-like clarity, tan head. Malty caramel aroma with hints of pitted fruit and quite a bit of esters. Almost peaty, but not smokey. Tastes sweet up front, almost cloying. sharp bitter bite behind earthy malt. Finishes with an astringent, alcohol linger. Has a unique high note I can’t quite place.
Nice beer to curl up and sip at near a fireplace with a book, but can’t see myself reaching for one otherwise.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a dark ruby with a small tan head and some lacing. Aroma is toffee, vanilla bean, and bourbon. Flavor is malt, dark fruits, plums, vanilla, caramel, light smoke, and a bit of sourness. Medium body with soft carbonation. Not bad.

Transfer from BA review on 5-8-12 -
Poured from bottle into snifter
Appearance – Pours a deep brown color with a small off white head. The head fades fast to leave a thin film on the top f the beer.
Smell –Big aromas of roasted malt are in this brew. These are mixed with some darker fruit aromas of cherry and figs as well as notes of some whiskey and a warming alcohol smell.
Taste – A sweet fruit and malt flavor meet the tongue. They are quite big and bold. The malt has a heavy dark fruit bread flavor. Almost like a fruit cake made of only dark fruits. These flavors are present throughout the taste, but more toward the middle other flavors begin joining them. Flavors of some lighter fruits, whiskey, and a light burning alcohol flavor develop more and more as the taste moves toward its finish. In the end a very satisfying scotch soaked sweet fruit cake taste is left in the mouth. It’s really quite nice.
Mouthfeel – The body of this beer is thick and chewy. It is very fitting for the sweet robust flavor. The carbonation while on the lower end is very fitting and allows the thick and chewiness of the beer coat the tongue with all its flavors.
Overall – This is a really nice tasting brew. A wonderful brew to sit back and relax with; very quite soothing and warming.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
I like this brew. It looks pretty much as expected, a clear reddish brown body that soon becomes a mere film. So what? Really pleasant aroma - rich and malty, bread with treacle and a whiff of alcohol. The flavor is pretty much the same, rich and malty, except that the alcohol recedes, making this beer too dangerously drinkable. Not complex, but very, very good.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 ounce bottle into snifter; 2013 vintage, best before 1/15/2014. Pours crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with solid retention, that reduces to a spotty lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big raisin, prune, cherry, caramel, toast, toffee, chocolate, brown bread, light nuttiness, light smoke, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of big raisin, prune, cherry, caramel, toast, toffee, chocolate, brown bread, light nuttiness, light smoke, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Slight earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, prune, cherry, caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, chocolate, light nuttiness, light smoke, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; with a nice malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very creamy, smooth, and moderately slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice scotch ale style. All around good balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Love me a good scotch ale and I liked the Russian Imperial Stout in the Big Eddy series, so I had to give this one a try. Pours a great dark amber color with a very small tan head that disappears right away. No lacing on the glass: I never understood why lacing is such a big deal anyway. The aroma is comprised of many sweet things: caramel, raisin are the most prevalent. As I kept smelling it, I could pick up some apricot, fig and what I can only describe as Pixy Stix. Complex aroma, but way too sweet for me. Almost headache-inducing. The taste is sweet also, but not as much as the smell. It has a tartness up front and in the aftertaste. There is also a little bitterness, which I was not expecting. Taste was just okay. Palate was slick with a decent aftertaste. Not my favorite; Founders Dirty Bastard is way better and cheaper. Schlafly Single Malt Scottish is also much better. Go with one of those.
