In 1906, the Kolsch-style beer originated from the Cologne region of Germany as a crisp and light beer to combat the summer heat. Leinenkugel’s® Canoe Paddler™ is our take on the Kolsch-style beer that we tweaked with a touch of rye. Our spring and summer seasonal has subtle malt flavors, a clean finish and adventurous quality.

One of my favorite breweries has produced another enjoyable beer. This Kolsch is easy drinking and light, but has some flavor. A good beer for a hot summer day.

12 ounce bottle pours a light straw yellow crystal clear. Minimal Whitehead that disappears quickly. Not much aroma to speak of kind of sort of a melon aroma. Light bodied with a twinge of apricot flavor very low bitterness very easy drinking lawnmower beer.

Bottle. Pours straw yellow with a thin white head. Aroma was mild with pale malts, grains and corn. Flavor of pale malts, sweet corn, grains, grassy hops and a hint of rye with a watery finish.

5/24/2014: Leinenkugel’s Canoe Paddler Kolsch-Style with Rye... Light and crisp, fruity and bready, spicy and slightly floral/grassy, mild bitterness and good effervescence. Okay overall, not great and mostly unmemorable. 12 fl. oz. bottle (AUG1114). Rating #210 for this beer.

12oz twist off cap bottle the delivers clear gold liquid into my glass that supports a thin white head. The aroma is grainy and then it has a mix of sugar sweet malts and floral hops. At the edge of the aromatics there seems to be a slight lemon to lime like sensation. OK, smells a bit sweet but not hateful. The taste starts thick an sweet for the style with sugary sweet malts and really nothing else redeeming going on here. This just stays sugar sweet for the most part. Aside from that I notice sweet fruity esters that are a bit pear like to go along with some faint grainy malts. This is not a Kölsch. This is way too sweet.

Bottle at America Strikes Back, Ulfborg. Pours clear light golden with small light head. Clear aroma of yeast, hops and paper, with subtle malty notes. Sweetish, malty flavour, with a refreshing flair of citrus to it, and some notes of skunk just to wake one up from a dream. Bittersweet and cardboardlike aftertaste. Could be better, especially without the perfumed note at the end.

This definitely makes for a damn decent lawnmower beer, which is more than I can say about a lot of craft beers. It claims to be a koelsch w/ rye which isn’t really a thing but I can deal w/ it. It is more like a koelsch than most brewpub varieties. It would not be surprised to find this was actually a lager though. I see no mention of ale yeast on the package and there’s no real fruity yeast character at all. It pours a golden yellow color w/ almost no head save a ring of fizzy bubbles. The nose is hoppy--can’t really pick out any specific hop flavors though--and also has a good waft of fresh baked bread. This has a nice doughy malt character and a refreshing lemony character is brought out by the extremely vigorous carbonation. I think in most other styles this carbonation would be way too much but it works OK in such a light beer but maybe is covering up some nuance that you might notice otherwise. This is a pretty darn good beer. I have come to expect things out of Leinenkugel’s regulars to be pretty bland and useless but this has some real character to it.
