COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 1906, the Kolsch-style beer originated from the Cologne region of Germany as a crisp and light beer to combat the summer heat. Leinenkugel’s® Canoe Paddler™ is our take on the Kolsch-style beer that we tweaked with a touch of rye. Our spring and summer seasonal has subtle malt flavors, a clean finish and adventurous quality.

12oz bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a pale, clear gold with a half finger of white head. Aroma is mostly grains. Some very very light hops. I can’t really get any rye. Taste is light bitter. Grains, light rye and very light citrus hops. Light bodied with a thin texture. Lively carbonation and not much of a finish. Overall, meh. It may as well be a pale lager.

Nothing special here. Just a changeup for my beer fridge. Not great, but not bad. Subtle sweet. Reminds me of MGD, but way better

Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a clear golden amber color with a two finger head of bubbly white foam. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave rings of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a grainy and slightly bready smell mixed with a little bit of a lemon and grassy smell. A tiny bit of yeast and rye are there as well rounding out the smell. Taste – The taste begins with a slightly grainy and bready flavor mixed with some caramel and a little bit corn syrup and grass. As the taste moves forward a little bit of a rye flavor works its way onto the tongue and brings with it some citrus and spice flavors of a light pepper and some clove. With some lemongrass coming at the very end, one is left with a bready spiced flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is rather light and thin with a carbonation level that is a little bit on the higher side. Fairly nice for the style and for making for a rather easy drinking brew even in light of the somewhat odd mix of tastes of the brew. Overall – A decent brew, with a good feel and a decent aroma and feel which made for a crisp and refreshing brew. It does however have a somewhat odd flavor combination, which I did not find all that approachable, but with that said others may like it, so I would say it is least one to give a try to.

A subdued aroma of yeast, pours a clear pale straw color with no real head. A watery feel with a taste of yeast, hints of grass, with a very short lasting yeast finish.

What’s that god-awful phrase people use to say they like something? It "floats my boat" (or something like that?) Yeah, Canoe Paddler didn’t do that for me. It did not "paddle my canoe." (Could that be a new euphemism? I think it has potential as a masturbation euphemism.) It wasn’t as crisp, refreshing, or smooth as I wanted. And really those are the only "criteria" I have for a Kolsch. It’s not truly awful or anything, but it’s not something I’ll have again.
