COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 1906, the Kolsch-style beer originated from the Cologne region of Germany as a crisp and light beer to combat the summer heat. Leinenkugel’s® Canoe Paddler™ is our take on the Kolsch-style beer that we tweaked with a touch of rye. Our spring and summer seasonal has subtle malt flavors, a clean finish and adventurous quality.

Bottle: Pale gold/straw pour with a thick white pillowy head. aroma is biscuity malt, light grains and lemony hop. Flavour is basically kolsch like, though the addition of rye gives it a grainy sourness. light grassy/lemony hop in the finish. Actually will probably be pretty refreshing through the spring/summer. Very clean, if somewhat understated brew.

A subdued aroma of yeast, pours a clear pale straw color with no real head. A watery feel with a taste of yeast, hints of grass, with a very short lasting yeast finish.

What’s that god-awful phrase people use to say they like something? It "floats my boat" (or something like that?) Yeah, Canoe Paddler didn’t do that for me. It did not "paddle my canoe." (Could that be a new euphemism? I think it has potential as a masturbation euphemism.) It wasn’t as crisp, refreshing, or smooth as I wanted. And really those are the only "criteria" I have for a Kolsch. It’s not truly awful or anything, but it’s not something I’ll have again.

(bottle - 12 oz) Clear pale gold with a thin white head. Lightly sweet aroma with hints of grass and some straw. Flavor is incredibly light. Some light malts and grassy hops with a bit of a watery finish. Not bad but really mild.

12oz can (courtesy of Headbanger) poured into a Kölsch glass at 40°. Color is bright gold with mellow carbonation and a thin tight white head. Aroma is faint and slightly sweet giving off a grain scent. It has a light body and crisp mouth feel. Flavor of lemon zest, rye and just a hint of hop spice. After taste is clean with a very mild bitterness showing. Overall it’s a well done Kölsch, but it just too light for my taste.

Typical Kolsch-style. Similar to a pale lager. Mild, bitter bite in the middle.
