Creamy Dark is aged slowly for a deep, dark color; velvety flavor; and a smooth finish.

Leinie’s beers are not going to woo any serious craft beer lover away from his favorites but they serve as good training brews for beer drinkers who are curious about better beers but who need to tip toe into the realm. Thankfully, Miller Brewing has probably done more good than harm to this once independent regional brewery in the north woods of Wisconsin. I’ve been to the north woods though and people there truly do love their Leinie’s so when in Rome… Creamy Dark looks the part of a serious dark lager but it comes up short on flavor and character. I’m not quite sure how they can put in enough dark malt to give it it’s great appearance yet leave it so short on flavor notes we all expect from a good dark beer. Not even a hint of chocolate or coffee flavors…just dark beer that doesn’t taste much different from it’s lighter cousins.

Lightly roasty-toasty aroma. Clear dark brown color, almost mahogany. Head and carbonation are average/appropriate for the style. Maltiness and bready flavors make up most of the profile, with a slight amount of sweetness and some lighter hop flavors towards the finish. Light bodied, and somewhat creamy mouthfeel. Not impressive by any means, but a decent enough dunkel. I’d drink it again. It is very easy to drink, no doubt.

Watery. Subtle roasted flavors of coffee and chocolate. Tasted following a Sprecher Black Bavarian, which may have contributed to the wateryness and initial lack of flavor. At $9 a twelver, I’ll buy this again.

Thin and doesn’t deliver a lot of flavor. Looks good though. I’m a fan of the Leinie’s line, with this probably being my least favorite of the bunch.

Kind of watery with a very nice roasted malt flavor. Looks excellent, as I couldn’t see through it at all. The flavor is a little light, but I tend to expect that from Leininkugel’s.

Faint, roasted malt aroma. Light tan, frothy head with decent retention. Roasted malt flavor; alcohol is unobtrusive to unnoticeable. ABV must be on the low side. Very drinkable beer, although could be a little more flavorful.

Had this on tap with dinner this evening. Not very full bodied, but I think looking at it (VERY dark) you expect porter or stout body - no, it’s lager, all right. A bit sweet, of course, but nicely balanced by a steady undertone of bitterness (nice job, brewmaster!) Not al all complex, though - a good, basic dark beer, nothing more. The Leinenkugel family resembalnce is there (a compliment). Worth a try, and very good with food.

The ratings seem a touch high for this one - to me it’s too confused and muddy to be a truly pleasant dark beer.

Not much going on in the nose and a bit weak in the final analysis - the flavours are great but it’s like they are being held back, never really allowed to get going to complicate the smooth texture. What are those flavours? Well a good deal of sweetish malt that tosses between caramel and chocolate, with some toasted, smokier edges.

I enjoyed this crisp, slightly bitter beer on tap. i’d like to try it again
