Leinenkugelís Snowdrift Vanilla Porter is a robust and velvety addition to Leinenkugelís seasonal selection. This porter-style beer is aged on real vanilla to reveal rich layers of caramel, coffee and chocolate that is ideal for the season.

There are certain brewing techniques I always thought could be used to make any beer taste good (for example: adding a ton of hops, or adding a lot of sweet flavors). Though once in a great while I encounter one that shows that itís still possible to screw up what should be an idiot-proof recipe. Leinenkugelís Snowdrift Vanilla Porter is a good example of this. What should be a standard porter with vanilla added, it drinks like an amateurish homebrew. Itís not horrible, but itís nowhere near as good as it should be.

I poured a 64oz growler into a nonic pint glass. My girlfriend picked this up for $12.99 ($0.20 per ounce).

Appearance: Opaque black hue. Pours to a small, tan, foamy head which dissipates quickly and leaves only a little lacing.

Smell: Quite faint aroma of mineral water and a hint of chocolate.

Taste: Thereís a certain quality of faux craft (or ďcraftyĒ) beers like Leinenkugelís thatís noticeable right away. Iím not sure how to describe it other than itís simply not an authentic taste. Right away, I notice thereís a porter-like composition to this palate, but itís not as genuine-tasting at it should be. Thereís an essence of dark malt, but itís not especially roasty or toasty. It actually kind of reminds me of a cola gone flat. Thereís a consistent sweetness here, but itís almost as though itís from aspartame. There is a vanilla taste on the back end, though itís mild and short-lived. All these complaints aside I have to admit there is nothing particularly off about this brew as far as brewing flaws. There is a noticeable mineral taste, but itís tolerable.

Drinkability: Leinenkugelís Snowdrift Vanilla Porter is most definitely not a fizzy yellow beer, yet the mouthfeel feels like that of one, only less carbonated. Itís definitely thin, but not slick; and at least thereís no cloying aftertaste (or any aftertaste for that matter). For a 6% ABV brew, itís amazing easy to gulp down, but it should have more body and be the kind of beer thatís savored, not chugged.

Very dark brown with a thin tan head. Chocolate and sweetness with a slight bit of sour. Hint of light char and chocolate, dark fruit, malt and slightly dry and little bitterness. I do really taste any vanilla. Good beer

Bottle. Smoked malt and vanilla aroma. Dark color with thin head. Vanilla flavor upfront; smoke and chocolate follow. Medium sweet finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark brown pour, pretty clear-- no murkiness. Off white, fizzy head. Aroma is coffee, cocoa, faint soy. Mouthfeel is pretty light, lots of bubbles. Taste is semi-sweet chocolate, vanilla, gas station cappuccino. Moderately sweet. Faint hazelnut, macadamia. Hint of smoke. Not bad for a macro.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a dark brown with a beige head. Pretty sweet, definitely a lot of vanilla and chocolate, with lighter nuts, earth, tobacco, and brown sugar. Light body, moderate to medium carbonation, and a sweet, fizzy mouthfeel. So so.

My new favorite beer. Thin for a porter but smoky, mildly sweet, great finish. Drink on tap for best taste.

UPDATED: NOV 10, 2015 Pours medium to dark brown with light kahki head. Aromas of chocolate coffee and a little vanilla. Taste is similar with a little smoke thrown in at the end. Mouth feel is a little thin for porters. But a very easy drinking beer especially on tap.

Nice dark brown pour with a small head. Caramel and roasted malt on the nose. Flavor matches, wasnít really able to pick up any vanilla, but itís not bad as a porter by itself.

Poured from a bottle. Very little head and lacing, but delicious rich Brown color. Great aroma, almost more coffee than vanilla. Bitter dark chocolate notes as well. Yummy.
