On tap (creamer?) at the brewpub. Pours a pitch black with a creamy beige head. Nice lacing! Nose is pretty tame with some light roasted malt and some ash. Taste is dry, carries some good roasty notes but overall it isn’t too tasty. Hops? Maybe lightly in the finish. Anyway, body is light and mouthfeel weak and watery. Not bad, not great for sure.

On tap at the Ottawa location, dark brown color, with a thick creamy tan head, mild mochaish, light black coffee, roasted, black, chocolate malty nose, with some light burnt toast, burnt chocolate cake, dark bitter chocolate baking bar accents, with a faint hershey almond chocolate bar, nutty note in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a mild roasted, chocolate, black, toasted malty, black coffee character, with some mocha, burnt toast, dark bitter chocolate bar, faint molasses flavours, with a light smooth ground coffee undertone, leading towards a coffeeish, lingering roasty bitterness finish.

Tried at the Ottawa brewpub, but says it was the monthly beer (The Stout, 5.7% ABV. with a 35 IBU). Is it possible to have a stout in a brewpub, only one month a year ?? Anyways, pours a dark brown with a nice creamy head (probably nitro) with very long retention and decent thick lacing. Roasted malt nose with hints of fruits that calm down the dark malt. Eventually, caramel blends in. Smooth silky mouthfeel, not too heavy, but with good creaminess. Mild roasted malt taste with nice light bitterness, which blends well with some smokiness. A nicely balanced brew, between the dark malt and hop that goes down very well. Hope they can put this one yearly like they did with their IPA.

on tap at quebec city brewpub location. nitro-ed. very dark brown with a small off-white head, some retention, very nice lacing. plain coffee and underlying slightly off fruitiness, burnt malts, herbal-grassiness. soft carbonation, creamy and relatively light bodied, slightly harsh grassy-coffeeish short to medium long finish. drinkable but... meh.

March 18, 2012 - on draught at 3 Brewers, Toronto. Black-red pour with a smallish but lasting creamy tan/light brown head. Smells dry and roasty, nutty/coffee burnt character, not sweet at all, just a little dusty wheat bitterness and oily (7+). Taste follows, but a grabby sharp mineral character overrides it and detracts a bit - but not harsh, boozy or sweet at all (7-) with some light herbal bitterness and pretty much no alcohol aggressiveness. Creamy and slick, mild carbonation but a nice soft mouthfeel, average body: quick-finishing, dry and slightly gritty in the aftertaste. Simple, pretty good.

Tap at 3 Brasseurs, Vieux Montreal - 04/03/12. Darkish brown, definately not black with a tan head. Roasted malts, a bit of chocolate - not a lot in the aroma. Malty nutty taste, medium bodied, dry. Not going to win any awards from me, even the server said don’t bother with it !!!
