341ml bottle served in a snifter around 6 degrees: This here is the first product from Microbrasserie Nouvelle-France I come across. They’re a small microbrewery down at Saint-Alexis-des-Monts, which is about 30 km southwest of Shawinigan. This ale poured a clear rich ruby robe topped off by about a finger of slightly tanned head midway between frothy and creamy. Retention is at an average level and some lacing does spot the glass. As for carbonation, I did spot some but it wasn’t very present. The nose is very appealing with roasted malts, brown sugar and good herbal hops. It’s richness gives the pace to what will hit the tongue. It’s nice to have grassy/herbal hops add depth to the aroma. The flavours are bold and deep with tons of roasted barley malts and slight sweetness. Hops add a nice grassy features to the rest. As for the finish, well thanks to hops it’s slightly bitter. I don’t know about you, but when I take a sip at a Red Ale, I expect boldness and richness and this is exactly what you get with this brew. There is even an instant coffee side to it that surprised me. Overall, the best way to describe this one is: Richness and depth. It’s full-bodied, has all the features of a high quality Red Ale in terms of flavours and aroma and it is far from diluted. I would totally pair this with grilled meats, a nice brisket and strong nutty cheeses.

Bouteille 341 ml. 4.5%. Correct.

Originally rated June 2008. Thanks to Driss for bringing this one back from Quebec City. Pours an amber colour with lots of tiny bubble carbonation. The head is frothy, off-white, big, with medium retention and little to none lacing. Small sediments are found at the bottom. The nose is cider-like, especially red apples and slight vinegar. Carbonated and mild-bodied that becomes flat quite fast. Decent taste of red apples, but does not last long with hardly any aftertaste. Nothing special, prefer the Boréale Rousse.

Bottle (341ml). Via trade with Viper666. Deep clear copper, smallish fizzy off-white quick-diminishing head (3+ for colour). Pretty standard amber aroma - sweet lightly toasted malt, a little hint of generic berry fruit, a bit of ESB-like hop bitterness. The taste - sweet and syrupy, some caramel toffee character with dry, stale weedy bitterness in the finish. Watery, wan body, very lightly carbonated, slightly stale and stale buttery aftertaste, but up-front actually too sugary. Not all that bad - went down okay on my balcony, I drank it all.

Bottle - 341ml. Nice amber body with a fair off-white foamy head. Average malty/hoppy aroma with strong caramel hints. Taste is slightly misbalanced. It carries grainy and brown sugar notes and ends with a short bittersweet finish. Boring.
