Lubiere (8243) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 10, 2008
A deep dark stout with a thick froathy big bubbled moka head. A rather grassy aroma with notes of cacao, herbs and a bit of chocolate. In mouth, a good chocolate malt with herbal notes, burned toasts, sustained bitterness. Not a lot of oranges here, but you wouldnt want that in a stou. Very nice. Bought at Aux Dieux de la Biere, Trois Rivieres, 6.79$.

Bottle... Lightly hazed, dark, cola-colored ale with burnt caramel tints around the edges of the glass. Huge, frothy, beige head. Endless retention. Mocha aroma with minerally, metallic notes. Medium to full-bodied with lively carbonation. Fairly well-balanced with notes of coffee and chocolate. Sways a touch onto the bitter side. Lengthy, tongue-numbing, cocoa and coffee ground finish. Many thanks to glouglouburp for shipping this bottle to Florida!

Ughsmash (6670) - Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA - JAN 24, 2009
Bottled. Poured deep brown with a lovely tall cap of beige head that stuck to the glass nicely. The aroma had semi-sweet roasted barley and black malts accented by orange peel and a rather bizarre Necco Wafer character.. bit too much char to it, but otherwise solid. The flavor was mostly roasted black malts with mild oaken chocolate coming out, but no other significant malt flavorage.. light orange sweetness and herbal bitterness rolled around the mouth and settled on the dry finish. Medium-bodied with heavy carbonation on the palate.. lotsa roast to it.. finished grainier and dry. Aiight.

First rating for this! Courtesy of HTH. Black body, massive foamy khaki head. Light roast malt accents orange and tangerine citrus in aroma, notes of citrus seeds. Solid yeasty character as well. Dry bitterness of the roasty malt is my first impression of the flavour, with light clementine orange touches and yeast. Average palate. Very nice, interesting. One of the more unique brews I have had recently.

Bottle courtesy of glouglouburp. Pours brown with a generous tan head. Smells of soap, nuts, dark fruit. Tastes of cherries, nuts, spice, a touch of bitterness.

Objectively speaking: The original idea of an orange-flavoured stout. Good execution, but the flavour match is dubious. One of those rare beers that takes me several sips to just know if I globally like it or not.
I like: Moderate roastiness. Comfortable palate, cleansing carbonation. Not exagerated orange - just soft and perfumey with the softest bitter finish. Never juicy, the stout character is more important than the fruit’s. No artificial feel.
I dislike: It’s nothing that I really dislike, but I anticipated to like it more. Their regular Noire is excellent to me. This feels like a useless addendum. Furthermore, I don’t feel any freshness.

Bottle (750ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow, jerc and tupalev, my bottle via trade with Viper666. Poured opaque black with a tan fluffy lasting head. Sharp yeast with citrus riding over a standard overroast malt aroma. The taste is of a bitter orange zest and lemon seed citrus sharpness, actually fairly sweet, very roasty indeed, as it warms it tastes like sweet ripe orange and dark chocolate. Average stout body, slight hop astringency, medium-long linger and the yeast/zesty character lasts longer than the roast malt - very interesting and different, good effort.

In short: A very roasted basic stout with orange peels that blend in surprisingly pretty well.
How: Bottle (many times), 341ml and 750ml. This rating for a 6 months old 341ml
The look: Black body topped by a medium tan head
In long: Roastiness and oranges come together on the nose to give a burnt oranges aroma. Body is rather fluffy and has a bit of Belgian ale mouthfeel. Roastiness level is rather hight doesn’t come with much coffee/chocolate flavour, just burnt malts. The orange peels do not come through that much but add a pleasant fruity notes and an impression of fruity hops in the finish. Overall rather dry to the point of feeling somewhat dusty. An ok little brew. This extra-small micro brewery is a very small operation and my 341ml bottles had a label of 750ml. Now these are guys that truly believe that size does not matter.

12-oz. Thanks, Glouglouburp! Pours a nearly opaque dark brown with a thick, surging, rocky tan head. Plenty of lace showing as it falls. Very mild nose of roast, dark, fruit, and a bit of dark bread. Medium, creamy body, soft carb. Super mild mid-palate: fruit never shows up; nuts, brown bread, and roast do, though. Mild finish. Solid little effort.

Bottle (750ml) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, tupalev & jerc -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a very dark ruby-brown with a huge lasting fluffy tan head. Nice lacing. Aroma of lightly roasted sweet malt, brown sugar, spices and some citrus (!) -- quite the interesting combo. Flavour’s sweet and yeasty with roasted malt, spices and citrus. Medium bodied. Good stuff, unique and tasty!
