June 17, 2013 - on handpull cask at the brewpub. Slightly hazy amber-gold with a large white foamy/creamy last head - amazing for cask. Aroma weirdly like a gruit to me - buckwheat honey, tart off-dry red wine, plenty of resin bitterness, definite alcohol, and tons and tons of green oak tannin. Taste follows close on with the pinot grape coming out more than the aroma, but it works fairly well unlike other BA dipas - restrained IPA really, not quite double, oaky though, a little sourness but not off-putting and quite well balanced. Thick, airy but lightly carbonated, acidic dry resin finish and a damned good beer - well suited to cask, IMO.

bottle shared by ian g., thanks man. pours cloudy dark golden orange with a thin off-white head, some retention and lacing. fruity caramel - doughy toasted malts, wood, vegetal and pine, boozy caramel, grass, pepper, raisins and red wine barrel too. average to moderate carbonation, medium body - oily, slightly harsh green resin finish. much akin to a bold american barleywine - some residual sugars too. still enjoyable but not what i was expecting.

(Rating #4808)

A hazed amber ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, intense caramel malt with vinous qualities, treacle, pinot de charente, nice. In mouth, a barley wine like offering with corky notes, dry powdery character, barrel wood, OK. On tap at Hivernale, Feb. 23 2013.

Tap (Hivernale): Hazy amber color ale with not much head. Aroma of vanilla, raisins and oak with very little hops coming through and a weird cheap pinot finish. Taste is dominated by cheap pinot notes with quite vinous feel with some vanilla and oak notes also perceptible and some dry raisins notes. Hops are completely overshadowed. Body is full with low carbonation. An experiment gone bad?

My Bottom Line:
Fruit salad juices, green wood, alcohol and hop resins bathe idly in this Barrel-Aged concoction.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A thin ring of foam sinks into the muddy red.
-The mouthfeel is pretty flat and the flavors are rather loose. This needs some tightening up on many fronts.
-The hops are awkward throughout. Overtaken by the barrel in the aroma and contributing lax resins here and there.
-I get the impression a bottle-conditioned version will get MUCH better results.
-What a strange concoction from BdTemps; not up to their quality standards too. And was the lack of carbonation actually desired?

On tap at Hivernale des Brasseurs.
