3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 grandgenie (259) - gatineau, - SEP 13, 2011

Draft at brewpub. Opaque, muddled dark auburn. Powerful aroma of big intense oxidized wooden barrel. Behind the guise are raspberries, caramelized apple. Powerfully sweet. Dries naturally in the finish with an aftertaste of bready malt, which is nice and makes it feel like a barleywine. Finishes with a smack of black cherry. Not bad, not mind blowing.

Murky as heck. No head. Massive brandy barrel aroma w light brown sugar and darker berries. Sweet, sugary with rich caramels and late blast of brandy barrel and alcohol. On the palate at least, this is well-balanced.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Boutip (3467) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 1, 2012
Draft: Poured a deep copper color ale with a small foamy head with light retention and light lacing. Aroma of candy-like brandy notes with toffee and caramelized sugar is sublime. Taste is a great mix between sweet Brandy notes with candies and toffee notes with deep caramelized sugar notes. Body is quite full with medium carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well brewed with the barrel-aging adding great quality to the mix while retaining a good balance between drinkability and complexity.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 MartinT (6350) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - APR 23, 2012
My Bottom Line:
The deepest caramel slowly morphs into fieldberry jam and maple syrup in this decadent, intelligent Barrel-Aged Scotch Ale.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the deep red.
-Higher alcohols are perceived early after the pour, but they evaporate rather quickly.
-The mouthfeel is definitely rich, but it doesn’t appear too heavy.
-The brandy barrel presence is leveled with that of the caramelized malts.
-Alcohol is obvious, but that may be the barrel’s fault.
-I have no idea why, but a lot of Québécois brewers are really defining the upper tier of Scotch Ales. This is just another very impressive example.
On tap at Siboire.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 tom10101 (213) - Quebec, CANADA - APR 21, 2012
Tap at Soirée des Grands Crus, Siboire (Sherbrooke). Appearance: Dark brown with a medium brown head. Good lacing. Aroma: Heavy nose of brandy, oak, caramel, toffee, vanilla. Taste: Again, strong notes of brandy, oak, caramel, toffee. Warming alcohol. Nice long aftertaste. Overall: Completely different beer from the regular one. This one is one of the best scotch ale I’ve tasted. Full bodied (x 2), complex and decadent. Great beer.
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 cfrancis (1366) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 24, 2012
Pours opaque black with an early beige head that disappears to a light ring. Aroma is sweet, a small sting of alcohol and slightly toasted malts. Taste is smooth, velvety mouthfeel, small warming of the alcohol and a sweet, soft aftertaste of the sherry with the dryness of the oak. Great beer, glad I picked up a barrel. It just takes the greatness of the original and smooths and softens up the taste which makes it a fabulous sipper.

Excellente.

In short: A thick malt orgy with nice oak barrels. Excellent sipper.
How: Tap at Soirée Des Brasseurs 2011, Shawinigan
The look: Dark brown body topped by a medium beige with medium retention
In long: Nose is big fat heavy caramel and toffee and vanilla and stuff. That beer smells “calories”, you get fatter just smelling it. Taste is pretty much what I expected. Thick caramel, molasses, vanilla, oak barrels, moderate bourbon presence, toffee, you get the picture... lots of “heavy” flavors. Alcohol was very well hidden in this monster body. Very well carbonated which made it surprisingly drinkable. I actually prefer this fatter thicker version over the regular base beer. Excellent. Too bad this beer is so expensive, even on tap at the festival it was very expensive. I spend so much on beer nowadays that I can’t afford to go away on vacation anymore, so now I just drink until I don’t know where I am.
