Two pints at BdT and my favourite of the day. Cloudy mahogany with a creamy tan head. Vanilla, nice brandy, lots of caramel and cooked brown sugar with a hint of yams, some nice malt undertones, decent hop presence. Full body, mild carbonation, sweet, becomes somewhat dry, delicious.

Tasted at the 2012 Winterlude Winter Beers and Wines. Beer of the night! Pours a brown and orange with a off white frothy top. Aroma is raisin, fig and barley, all with a sweet overlay of the brandy. Taste is fantastic! The great caramel and raisin complexity that I love with the regular Mea Magna but with a subtle sweetness and added depth from the brandy. It is not overpowering, it just adds another layer, just how it should be.

Boutip (4818) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 22, 2011
Draft: Poured a bright mahogany color ale with a medium foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of sweet rich caramelized malt with light well rounded notes of vanilla. Taste is a mix between a well balanced caramel and light toffee malt base with light vanilla and rounded notes from the barrel-aging. The hops were not nearly as present as the non-barrelled version with a lot more attention directed to the malt base. Body is about average with nice creamy texture with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very different from the base beer and easily drinkable.

(Rating #3487)

Sample drank at "La Soirée des Brasseurs 2010" in Shawinigan, on August 13. Hazelnut caramel brown, good head. Heavy sweet aroma of malted barley, fun alcohol sensation. Slightly spicy taste of malted barley and brown sugar, very pleasant aftertaste of alcohol. Dum Dum, you are decadent!

In short: A highly drinkable rich fruity and hoppy barley wine. Well done.
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Cloudy light bronze body topped by a very small beige head
In long: I won’t bother with much of a description here. I have reviewed their regular Magna Culpa and I did not find this oak aged version much different from the original. Weird that on the same day I found their oak aged Obscur Desir very different from the original and the oak aged Mea Culpa very similar the original. So basically my rating of the original applies here except this one is a tiny bit less leafy in the hops department and has a bigger caramel presence. I’m not sure what was the point of putting this perfectly good barley wine in a barrel if it ends up tasting pretty much the same thing. Same with urine tests. What’s the point of doing urine tests? I also find they all pretty much taste the same.
