Bouteille 750ml.

750 ml bottle from BDT.

Appearance: Pours an opaque candy brown colour with a bit of tan head.

Aroma: Honey, dark malt.

Flavours: Honey, brown sugar, toffee, caramel, dark malt, moca, chocolate, molasses, figs.

Mouthfeel: Thick and coating with average carbonation.

Overall: A luscious Barley Wine with gobs of honey on the aroma and in the flavour. This shifts towards caramel and honey after it had been open a while. Overall, I would say this is a really nice well put together beer with a fair bit of complexity.

How: Bottle (750 ml) at home. Bottled in 2011, so 4 years old. Split 3-ways.

>>> An oxidized and a bit harsh resinous and mineral forward Barley Wine that doesn’t seem to be able to handle a few years of aging. I would be interested to try a younger version.

- Cloudy orangey brown with a small persistent tan head and little lacing.
- Resinous forward with strong earthy/mineral presence and ashed notes.
- There’s was some interesting fruity notes, but they were hidden by the main flavors.
- Oxidation (and cardboard flavor) is already quite present in this one and doesn’t fit well in the flavor profile, unlike some Barley Wine that ages pretty well.
- Taste is rather sweet, but the sweetness is quickly set aside by the borderline harsh piney and earthy presence.
- Not too boozy, but the drinkinability is still pretty low.

Flavors: Resinous, minereal/earthy presence, caramel, toffee, red fruits, oxidation notes, a bit of cardboard.

Pour is a beautiful burnt orange with a khaki cap that sticks around and leaves some mild lacing. Nose is burnt sugar, caramel, honey, candied fruit. Taste is even fruitier than the nose, which works (for me). It’s sweet, but with a nice bitterness on the finish. Alcohol is barely noticeable, especially for 9%. Really surprised at how drinkable this is.

750ml cork bottle poured in my usual snifter around 12 degrees. Pours a liquorish dark brown robe letting loose a semi firm hazel head showing moderate retention. The head leaves nice lacing spots and turns creamy upon setting down. The nose is dominated by malts and alcohol and shows a certain sweetness. The bouquet’s intensity isn’t so intense that you are overwhelmed so for that, I gave it a better score. On the tongue, you’re hit with the alcohol at first which quickly gives room to the sweet malts. The attack is quick and soon you’re left with a moderate bitterness pairing up nicely with the remains of the round body of the brew. Overall I liked this brew. I’m far from being a reference when it comes to barleywine so I’ll simply say that it was a good.

750ml Bottle. very dark brown reddish color. has an average head well sustained. sweet malts odor followed by apricot and melted sugars. taste is a bit hoppy (more than expected)and a bit resinous. The alcohol is very present, but the caramel malts are dominent in this one. followed by a rosted flavor and a dry bittersweet finish. Not perfect by any means but still a good mention in the realm of Barley wines

Orange ruby with a thick brownish foam. Strong scottish caramel, alcohol and a little nuts side. Taste is very sweet, strong caramel. A lively carbonation with a slick texture, finish is long and a little bitter/sweet. Too much on the scottish caramel side.
