Following the trail of strong Belgium Christmas beer, this one is very similar to a five spice cake only liquid form. Seven delightful spices blend themselves to the alcohol and sugar, enabling a warming and joyful feeling for the festive season. Strong liquorice, orange and grape flavours create an explosion of creamy foam.. The lasting mouth feel is one of comforting alcohol, liquorice and orange.

Cheers!

Aroma: A real spice cake with anise, crystallized fruits, licorice, pepper, jelly beans, cherries. A powerful and complex nose. Appearance: Brown with copper glints, head is average size, rocky and mostly lasting. Sticks well with a nice lacing. Taste: Liquid Christmas fruit cake with spices all over and a slightly roasted and peppery finish. Again we can find anise, black licorice, crystallized fruits and maraschino cherries. Alcohol is present and well felt giving a full wrapping of flavors. Body is thin and texture too watery; missing a bit of body here. A very sweet beer. May be a bit too much?

750ml bottle courtesy of Guillaume! Cheers! Served in a chalice. Appearance: Opaque brown, tiny beige head that dissipated very quickly. Aroma: Like an amazing gingerbread cookie. Cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, licorice. Smells exactly like the Scandinavian Christmas beers that I love, but even more well balanced. Palate: Thick bodied, fairly fizzy, short finish. Taste: very savoury. Not as sweet as expected, but still a bit sweet. The short finish makes the beer quickly drinkable. Really really really nice. Better than any other North American winter beer I’ve had by a mile.

750ml bottle via trade with Boutip. Thanks Phil. Pours a translucent deep brown with some lacing off white head. Nose is like a super fragrant candle, nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, Malibu rum, sun tan lotion, birch sap. Flavor is very sugary, ginger snaps, rum raisin ice cream, chai tea, carrot cake, some toasted malt at the end. Full, sweet, spicy finish.

750 ml bottle from brew pub, shared with Blair, cool, generic beer glass. Deep brown-black, with a nice tan foam. Adding ginger and some other warm spices, molasses, lightly fruity, deep and rich and spicy. Medium-full body with moderate low effervescence. Lots of warm spices, bright orange peel, molasses, tangy and rich, some alcohol; lightly sweet with mild bitterness and a long, spicy, slightly bright finish. Not loving it.

A FANTASTIC beer! Dark brown with some small tan head. Smells like a christmas spice cake, cloves, star anise, a bit sweet. Palate is medium-heavy with some smooth good carbonation. Taste is spicy, some candied fruit. I feel like I’m drinking a spice cake. Just fantastic.

Bouteille 750ml.

December 6, 2012 - on draught at Les Brasseurs du Temps. A full glass served cold, plus a smaller glass heated up. It’s a deep cloudy red with a solid lasting creamy tan head. Aroma is amazing - cherry, pungent dry Christmas cake spice, a little herbal bitterness for balance; fruity, some alcohol. Taste reminds me of DdC Rigor Mortis - strong alcohol, pungently bitter and spicy - just with tons of cherry; again, strongish alcohol, sweet caramel, extremely yeasty, cattily bitter - but with cherry; great. Thick, syrupy, decent low-level carbonation, starts fruity-syrup sweet, then lush yeast, then it finishes herbal. When hot, it’s not as sweet (unlike Quelque Chose, whick is very sweet)

Bottle. Dark brown pour with whitish head. Aroma is a real anise bomb, lots of rich brown sugar malts, spicy but not over the top. Taste is not too sweet which is surprising for this brewery, lots of spice and mellow alcohol warmth rounds out the sweet, rich malts. Palate is full but well carbed and not cloying. This style isn’t always a personnal favorite, but this one went down nicely.
