tap on the premises. dark brown pour with a small light beige cap, some retention and lacing. roasted malts, deeply roasted coffee, remains an interesting red fruitiness, hint of acidity, quite mineral and ashy, licorice-plenty, lactose-like under control sweetness, woodsiness. moderate to low carbonation, light to medium body - oat can do better than that, grassy-ashy-bitter coffee finish. more than decent sweet stout.

On tap at the brewpub with my wife our last night in Montreal for the year. Pours a deep black with a medium to large creamy dense beige head. Big beautifully sweet roast on the nose, redolent with chocolate and cocoa and loveliness. Just on the thin side of medium bodied, think this was a nitro pour so it looks lovely, but then loses out on the mouthfeel. Falls a bit short of the nose as well. Nice chocolate and cocoa, roast is all there, but it’s just not as intense and detailed in execution as it was on first approach. Not to say it’s bad in any way. It’s not. Perfectly sessionable stout. Finishes with a hint of sweet cocoa, dry and roasty. Nice.

Keg in Les Soeurs Grises. Dark black colour, thick beige head. More of a black malt than a roasted kind of stout, lots of chocolate flavours, a decent almost creamy grainy mouthfeel, hint of herbal notes from hops. Not one for extreme roasted tar stout lovers, but to me a very enjoyable pont.

On tap. Pours a dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, oats, bitter chocolate. Flavor of roasted oats, light bitter chocolate in the finish. A simple stout but it’s smooth and has a chocolatey finish. 7/4/7/4/15 (3.7/5)

In short: A very fruity and medium-roasty stout. Nice session beer.
How: Tap at brewpub.
The look: Black body topped by a small tan head.
In long: Nose is quite roasty and quite fruity. Taste toasty, very fruity (blackberries and some other dark fruits), a slice of raisin pie, even some vinous notes. Nourishing but not really corpulent. Medium oily body with a medium carbonation. Smooth leafy hop bitterness, enough to balance out the beer. This one actually felt less sweet than their IPA. After three visits since they started brewing this is my favorite from this new brewpub, not impressive but shows promises. I had this beer and many many more on my first visit at this new brewpub, and the day after everybody were writing angry posts about a very obnoxious drunk asshole at the pub the night before, weird, I was there and I didn’t even notice him.

(Rating #4705)
