COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Doppelbock, or "Double Bock", is a dark, extra full bodied lager after the best Bavarian tradition. Such beer was created by monks for the tough fasting period of Lent. They called it "liquid bread". Look for flavor notes of chocolate, candied fruit and roasted malt.

750 mL bottle. Pours dark amber with a foamy tan head that leaves no trace. Aromas of fruitcake, rum, candied orange, chocolate and demerara. Fairly sweet and firm bodied, moderate to heavy carbonation and full on the palate. Leaves a lingering sticky sweetness on the palate, gently offset by a touch of acidity and woody hop spice. Liquid bread indeed!

Pours dark unclear deep amber with a beige head. Aroma is malty and a bit sweet like a barleywine, but tamer with no booze. Flavor is tame as well for booze. I get big yeasty notes that are sweet, a bit fruity, and again, resembling a barleywine style.

2009 bottle. Dark brown pour with a tan head. Sweet roasted malt aromas with notes of coffee and dark fruit. Flavor is big toasted malt with chocolate and brown sugar notes. Very sweet, abv is well hidden too. Tasty brew, great example of the style.

Bottle, bought @ Beer City, Belgium. Pours clear chestnut with a small, creamy, beige film head. Aroma has sweet milky chocolate, toasted, light vinious, soft pepper. Medium carbonation, very creamy and light grainy mouthfeel. Flavour has lots of chocolate, toasted, raisins. Lots of malty bitterness. Lovely.

2013/09/10 - Pour a hazy, dark mahogany colour, with a soapy, khaki coloured head that reduces to a surface film and lingers. Minimal lacing. Aroma is bread, molasses, spices and dark fruits. Taste is similar to nose with a very sweet, malty aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium and sticky with smooth carbonation and a sharp, sweet malt finish. Almost cloyingly sweet...wished I had aged it to mellow out the flavours. Still, a good representative of the style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

4oz pour at Churchkey’s Bells event during DC Beer Week 2013. Pours an oily, viscous, translucent mahogany with some creamy, beige head. Nose of raisin, cherry, date, booze, rum, cane sugar. Flavor has tons of raisin, cherry, prune, date, malt, licorice, candy. Full, sticky finish. Loved this. Very well made.

750 ml bottle to snifter (2011 vintage, shared with the Mrs.; thanks DuffMan). Looks good; a hazy brown with light beige lacing. Smells solid; malty with notes of toffee, chocolate, and candied fruit. Tastes like it smells with a nice, smooth mouthfeel. A nice version on the style.

Pours a deep, opaque coffee brown with a nice, though not too persistent, tan head. Rich, malty aroma has a fruity overtone plus caramel and smoky notes and a nutty hint. Lip-smacking flavor delights with malty, caramel, nutty, earthy and subtle fruity notes. Smooth texture is quite thick, though the fizz leaves a little to be desired. Liquid bread? Sure - except try making a sammich with it. :D

750mL bottle. Pours black, with a light tan foam. Aroma of toasted malts, dark candi sugar, burnt chocolate. Tastes like bread, burnt sugar, roasted caramel candy, roasted malt bitterness. I splashed some on some of the hot coals while I was grilling some ribs, IT HAD THE AROMA OF FRESH BAKED BREAD. Hints of licorice in the finish. This is truly one of the best Doppelbocks I remember having! It shows its strength. (3728)
